SOWELL TO RAY 1849

The State of Alabama
Tallapoosa County
Know all men by these presents that we James Sowell & Silas Ray are held and 
firmly bound unto his Excellency Reuben Chapman, Governor of said State and his 
successors in office in the penal sum of Two hundred Dollars for payment of 
which will and truly to be made we bind ourselves and each and every of our 
heirs, Executors or Administrators jointly and severally firmly by these 
presents sealed with our seals and dated the 17th day of October A. D. 1849.  
The condition of the above obligation is such that if there be no lawful cause 
why James Sowell and Elizabeth Ray should not be joined together in the holy 
union of matrimony then this obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full 
force & virtue.

To any ordained minister of the Gospel, Judge of the County or Circuit Court or 
Justice of the Peace in and for said County- Greetings You are hereby 
authorized to celebrate the Rites of matrimony between James Sowell and 
Elizabeth Ray.  And this shall be your sufficient authority for so doing.  
Given under my hand and seal this 17th day October A. D. one thousand eight-
hundred & forty-nine and of American Independence the 74th year.
