That at the time of entering the service claimed for her said husband was 30 years of age, about 6ft in height with blue eyes, Sandy hair, light complexion, by occupation a Farmer and that he was born at (blank) County of (blank), State of So. Carolina that after leaving the service he resided at Several years at Talbert Co., Ga years (blank) Talapoosa Co., Ala. years (blank) at Tuskaloosa Ala 20 years, and at (blank) years; that she was married to him on the 28th of Feb 1826 at Monroe Ga, by (not now known), a Justice of the Peace, under the name of (blank); that he had no been previously married; she had not been previously married; that her said husband died at Tuskaloosa Ala on the x day of x 1863’ that she has not since remarried; that she has not heretofore made application for pension; that he did not make applicaton for bounty land, that she is a citizen of the United States and make this application for the purpose of obtaining a pension under the provision of the act approved July 27, 1892. She hereby appoints L. C. Hood & Co of Washington D.C. her lawful attorney, with full power of substitutions, and authorizes them to present and prosecute this claim. Hays residing at Tuscaloosa, County of (blank), State of Alabama persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being by me duly sworn, say that they have known the said Sarah Langley for twenty years and forty years, respectively; that they have every reason to believe, and do believe from the appearance of said claimant, and from their personal acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be, and a citizen of the United States, and they further say that they are fully satisfied that she is the person who was the wife of the identical Osey Langley who rendered service alleged in the above application (in the company of Arnold Seals in the regiment of Ga Vols, in the Cherokee War), by the following facts and circumstances, viz Mr Hayes sold them goods before the war and Mr. Palmer swears he ginned their Cotton and thresher wheat for them from 1854 a number of years. Wood & Co., Pension Attorneys Washington, D. C. Sept 8, 1893 Dear Madam To aid in establishing your claim for Widows Pension, the requirements should be compiled with and the evidence forwarded direct to our office for examination and filing at as early a day as practicable. 1st The date and immediate cause of the soldier’s death should be shown by a verified transcript from the public record, if such a record exist, and if not, then by the affidavit of the physician who attended him during his last illness. 2nd Marriage of the late soldier must be shown, first by a verified copy of the public record or church record, or second, by affidavit of the person who officiated, or, third, by affidavits of persons who witnessed the ceremony. 3d Testimony of two or nore credible witnesses having knowledge of the facts should be furnished showing whether you have remarried since the soldier’s death or divorce of the former husband or wife should be shown by competent evidence. 4th The birth dates of all the soldier’s children who were under the age of sixteen years at the date of (blank) should be proven, first by a verified copy of the church record of baptism or public record of births, or, seconc, by affidavit of the attending physician, or third, by affidavit of the female attendants or her persons having personal knowledge of the fact, who must state clearly by what means they are able to testify to the exact dates. 5th The evidence of two witnesses havint personal knowledge of the facts should be furnished, showing whether or not you have any means of support other that derived from your own labor or the contributions of others not legally bound to support you. If you are or have been the owner of nay property real, or personal, since the date of filling your application, you should state the character and value of same. It must be shown by affidavit of claimant that evidence of the first class cannot be procured before secondary evidence will be considered. All affidavits should be executed before some officer authorized to administer oaths. If executed before a Notary Public or Justice of the Peace, his official character must be shown, and signature certified to by the Clerk of the Court Unless said magistrate has a certificate of his official character on file in the Pension Department, in which case he must so state in his jurat. The credibility of witnesses and all erasures and interlineations in testimony must be certified to by the officer before whom the affidavit is executed. Eash witness must state his age and post office address and disclaim any interest in your case or concern in its prosecution. Widows Pension No. 4826 Claimant’s Affidavit State of Alabama County of Tuskaloosa, ss In the matter of Claim No. 4826 of Mrs Sarah Langley for Pension On this 27th day of October, A.D. 1893, personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths, Sarah Langley age 86 years, a resident of Tyner n the County of Tuskaloosa and State of Alabama whose post office address is Tyner, Ala, and well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declares, as follows: That she was married to Ousey Langley on the 28th day of Feb 1826 – in Monroe Co. Ga. – at her brothers house (since deceased) but does not know who officiated it – Does not know of any one now living who was present – Her husband and herself moved to Ala in 1841 or 1842 and have been resident of Tuskaloosa Co. ever since – That during the summer of 1863 (about June) her husband was assassinated and shot by one Heck Burns, while returning home from North Port, Ala to his home – and that said “shot” caused his death in about 4 weeks after its occurrence, or, sometime in July of 1863. That she has not since remarried – That this “statement” is written by A.K. Rogers from her own oral statements to him and that he said Rogers has no interest of any nature in the prosecution of this claim – nor is in any manner related to her – and that his P.O. is North Port Alabama (signed) Sarah Langley (her mark) J.T. Oct 28th, 1893 Sir: I have to request that you will please furnish a statement of the service of Osey Langley who it is alleged enlisted May. 1835 in Captain Arnold Seals Company of Alabama Vols. and was discharged (blank). Under the date of March 19th, 1851 your office reported this soldier as having served from June 1st 1836 to Sept 21st 1836. Please verify said report, and furnish any information that will tend to show the soldiers military service at the seat of war; also place and date of enlistment and discharge. Very Respectfully, D. Hamner age 51 Fifty one years is a resident of Tuscaloosa County Alabama whose Post Office address is North Port Tuscaloosa County Alabama Well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit and who being duly sworn declares each for himself in relation to aforesaid case as follows. I was personally acquainted with Ousy Langly Twenty years and was with him in his last sickness until his death. (signed) C. R. I was the Cornoners son and carried my Father to see Ousy Langly in his last sickness I saw Ousy Langly after his death (signed) J.P. I lived with my said Husband Osy Langly until his death and have never remarried Since his death all of which she swears to after being fully informed of the Contints (sic) of the same. Sept 1, 1836 at La Fayette and that the stations of the Company between muster-in and the last named date were as follows..(all left blank) Rolls do not show soldier absent except as follows Co. Roll shows casualties as follows, one man taken sick at the big Warrior Stand and was carried from there to Tuskegee and from thence to Tallahassee. No further record found F. Of Pensions Sir: In the matter of Claim No. 4826, of Sarah Langley – we could beg leave to state that the applicant is an aged and infirm widow. In destitute circumstances – being wholly without means of support – and at this writing very sick and is unable to procure necessaries or medical treatment. It is also fully believed – that she will never recover from her present illness – We would therefore ask that if consistent with the rules of the Department, her case be made “Special” in the further adjudication of her claim – We have no interest in the Claim. Ala, and well known to be to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declares as follows: That I Sarah Langley accept the date as given by ordinary of Monroe County Georgia February 8th 1827 as being the true and correct date of my marriage to Osey Langley As to the date of my marriage that was sent on the Bible leaf was set down though a mistake as that was the best of their recollection when it was set down in the Bible. And as to the date of Osey Langley Death he died on the 18th day of July 1863 Witness: W. H. Sanders G. T. They could not then state the date of the death of said Langley since that time the have learned by investigation the time he died. It was just on month from the time he was wounded. After being wounded and he was wounded the 18th of June 1863. And they further Swear that Sarah Langley is the widow of Osey Langley deceased.
