I Joel Brazeal of the State of Alabama in the County of Tuskaloosa being in a low State of health but in perfect mind do this nineteenth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty nine, make and publish this my last will and testament in nammer following: First I give and bequeath unto my eldest Son William Brazeal a negro boy named Tony also I give and bequeath unto my second son Joel Marshall Brazeal one negro boy named Moses and one named Nathan and one named Jinkins. I also give and devise to my youngest son Joel Marshall Braseal all that my whole messuage and tenements Situate lying and being at to wit: the east half of the north west quarter of section twenty two in township twenty four of Range Seven East in the district of lands offered for sale at Tuskaloosa Alabama containing eighty Acres and ten hundredths of an acre. Also the west half of the same quarter, also the east half of the south west quarter of Section Twenty two in same Range and township. To have and to hold to my said Son Joel Marshal Brazeal his heirs and assigns forever. Also I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Nancy Lawles the sum of one hundred dollars to be paid by my son Joel Marshall Brazeal paid by installments twenty five dollars per year the first installment to be paid the twenty fifth day of December One thousand eight hundred and thirty and so yearly till the hole is paid. [page 48] Also I give and bequeath unto my daughter Rosannah Cobb One negro Boy named Aaron and one negro boy named Edmon, Also I give and bequeath unto my daughter Leanner Coker One hundred and fifty Dollars to be paid by Azariah Cobb to be paid by installments thirty Dollars a year the first installment to be paid the twenty fifth day of December One thousand eight hundred and thirty and yearly till all is paid. Also I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Polly Bennet one negro Boy named Richmond. Also I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sally Clements one negro Boy named Nuten. Also I give unto my Son Joel Marshal Brazeal one Bed and furniture. Also I have given to my daughter Lucinda Humprhes One negro boy named Mager and negro Girl named Candes which I have given by a deed of Gift. Also I give and bequeath unto my wife Rebecca Brazeal one negro man named Dave and one negro woman named Bellinder. Also all my Stock of all kind also all my plates and household Goods Beadsteads Bedding and other furniture all the rest and residue of my pusanabel estate whatsoever and whatsoever of what nature kind and quality soever the Law may be and not herein before given and disposed of after payment of my debts. I do give and bequeath unto my wife Rebecca Brazeal to and for her own use and benefit. And I do hereby constitute and appoint my Son Joel Marshall Brazeal Sole Executor of this my last will and testament. Additional Comments: NOTE: The term "messuage" is actually a legal term that means dwelling-house, outbuildings, orchards, gardens, etc. At one time it supposedly had a more extensive meaning, apparently encompassing the house and lands. That archaic meaning is the one that seems to be used here.
