Her first husband was John Harrell, reported on a census record as having been born in North Carolina, birth year unknown. Elizabeth was born in Alabama around 1820 and she and John might have met and married there but by 1830 they were in Carroll County, MS. John Harrell died in Mississippi around 1851. He and Elizabeth had four children, Laminda born 1840 in MS and died 12 May 1840 Whitt, TX; Robert born 12 Feb 1848 in MS died 3 Apr 1938 Lawton, OK; Isaac born 1849 in MS and death year unknown; and Malinda born 1851 in MS and death year unknown. My great grandfather was Robert. After John Harrell’s death Elizabeth married Lewis Herring on 19 Dec 1852 and they moved to Yell County, Arkansas. When Great Grandfather Robert was 13 he was sent to stay with the Jonathan Williams family in Burnet County, Texas to keep him out of the Civil War. He never saw his mother, brother or sisters again. He became known as Robert Harrell Herring; hence our family surname is now known as Herring. On the 3 Oct 1869 Grandfather Robert married Mary Williams, one of Jonathan’s daughters. Robert moved to AR around 1897 then to Jack County, TX around 1910 then to Comanche County OK in 1912. His stepfather, Lewis Herring died in 1862 and Elizabeth and the family moved back to Mississippi. Laminda married her stepbrother, Brian Herring, and Elizabeth moved in with them. Around 1877, Elizabeth and three of her stepsons; Brian, Benjamin and Absolom, and her son Isaac Harrell moved to Parker County, TX then on to Palo Pinto County, TX. Elizabeth Austin Harrell Herring died in 1898 and is buried in the Hightower Cemetery, Erath County, TX as Little Grandma Herring.
