It’s location is approximately 3/4 mile west on Co. Rd. 34 from the Hwy. 43 & Co. Rd. 34 junction. The private drive to access the cemetery is located on the south side of the Carson & St. Stephens public road & in close proximity to the old Leroy Post Office which still stands along side the old home of Theodore Cheseborough Bowling, most recently occupied by Theodore Bowling & Laura McKee Pearson. The cemetery was established with the burial of Lillian Bowling (b. 11/10/1862 - d. 1/17/1863), the infant daughter of Capt. Robert Leroy & Sara Maria Cheseborough Bowling. The child died while Capt. Bowling was being treated in a military hospital for severe wounds sustained at the Battle of Murfreesboro, TN on Dec. 31, 1862 while fighting for the Confederate States of America. It is speculated that Capt. Bowling never saw this child. Family history states that Sarah Maria buried their child in the flower garden of their home so that she could properly tend to the grave. The second interment was William Wallace Bowling (b. 6/16/1860 - d. 7/17/1869), the 9 year old son of Capt. R.L. & Sarah Maria Cheseborough Bowling. He was buried beside his younger sister, Lillian & now have a common grave marker. The interments of young Lillian & William Wallace Bowling were the beginnings of the Bowling Family Cemetery & it has been the final resting place for subsequent Bowling descendants since that time & still continues to the present day. Of note, it is rather unusual that Capt. R.L. Bowling, his wife, & all nine of their children are buried in this graveyard. The only non-Bowling family members or spouses buried here are Mrs. Annie Creight Lloyd & her young daughter, Hallie Fannie Floyd. When the child died on 10/1/1870, her mother asked & was granted permission from Capt. R.L. & Sarah Maria Cheseborough Bowling to have her daughter interred next to the Bowling children. Mrs. Lloyd was subsequently interred next to her daughter after she died on 3/6/1873 at the age of 30. It is interesting to note that grave markers were not placed at the site of their burial until approximately 50 years later when a Major Lloyd traveled to Leroy in search of the graves of his mother & sister. The locations of the graves were shown to him by Selma Bowling Pearson & grave markers were placed by Major Lloyd. There are a number of public officials buried in this cemetery. Capt. R.L. Bowling, Sr. & his son R.L. Bowling, Jr. both served as Sheriff of Washington County. Frank W. Bassett, a son-in-law to Capt. Bowling, also served as Sheriff of Washington County. Capt. Bowling’s oldest son, Theodore Cheseborough Bowling, served as Washington County Treasurer & County Superintendent of Education as did his grandson, Theodore Bowling Pearson. Theodore C. Bowling also served as the first Postmaster of Leroy after he established the first Post Office there in 1896 & named it “Leroy” in honor of his father, Capt. Robert Leroy Bowling, Sr. Robert Shaw Bowling represented Washington County in the Alabama state Legislature. Harry Lee Glover & his son, Benjamin Nash Glover, were both Alabama Senators. Richmond Greer Pearson served as Washington County Commissioner, was member of the Washington County Board of Education, & was Leroy’s Postmaster at the time of his death. Virginia Williams Bowling, wife of T.C. Bowling, & their daughter, Selma Bowling Pearson, also served as Postmaster of Leroy for many years. Marion Caroline Shaw Bowling served as Postmaster for the town of St. Stephens, AL for many years. Representatives of the local medical & teaching community can also be found here. Robert Shaw Bowling, Jr. was a much-loved Family Physician in Jackson, AL located just over the Tombigbee River bridge in neighboring Clarke County. Thomas Rutledge Lenoir, husband to Olive Bowling, was also a practicing physician in Womack Hill, AL. Pine Grove School, initially a one room school house, was built by T.C. Bowling & Mr. D.D. Powell of Carson, AL. This school was the beginnings of, & is now known as, Leroy High School. Allen Mobley Pearson, Ph.D. retired as Professor Emeritus of Entomology from Auburn University. All four children of Benjamin Nash Glover, Ben Jr., Mary Bowling, Emily, & Billie Sue all became teachers. Ruth Harling Bowling was a long-time school teacher & librarian at Leroy High School. Military Veterans are also buried in the Bowling Family Cemetery. R.L. Bowling, Sr. & T.C. Bowling fought for the the Confederate cause. R.L. was Captain of Company A of the 32nd AL Infantry & his oldest son, T.C. Bowling, enlisted as a Private in Company F of the 7th AL Cavalry. Robert Shaw Bowling enlisted & served in an ambulance unit with the U.S. Army in France during WWI.
