Bridges was another of the earlier settlers of the county, and one of its most influential citizens for nearly forty years. His service as a legislator began in 1825, and he served the county thirteen years in that capacity. He was also judge of the county court for several years. His death occurred in 1858, at the age of 58 years. Judge Bridges accumulated a large estate, for he was a good lawyer and a successful planter. He was full of public spirit and benevolence, but of strong will and fiery temperament. His wife was a Miss Bethea, of the county. Additional Comments: John W. Bridges & Elizabeth Bethea were married September 26, 1826 by Jonathan Anderson, MG, at the home of David Bethea. Security was signed by Philip P. Bethea. (1) From the 1850 US Census, Wilcox County, AL, John W. Bridges was 52 years old, born in South Carolina. With him were Elizabeth G, age 52 (his wife, born in South Carolina, and Mary, age 9, born in Georgia. In the Bethea Cemetery, Wilcox County is a tombstone that reads: Infant son of Judge John W. & Elizabeth Bethea Bridges, no dates.
