Mary Bell, a negro woman in the employ of Mr. W. W. Moore was murdered last Thursday night at Bridgeport by Reg. Black, a young negro with whom she had been living for several years. Jealously was said to be the cause. The murder was a most brutal one. Black had concealed himself on the road side and it is said struck the girl in the head with an axe as she was passing on her way to church. He also attempted to kill another girl who was with the Bell woman, but she managed to get away from him. The murderer came to Camden that night and early Friday morning surrendered to deputy Sheriff McWilliams and had a preliminary trial last Saturday morning before Justice Purifoy and was held over to the grand jury without bail. The negroes of the vicinity where they were, it is said were greatly worked up over the crime and hunted all night for Black with the avowed intention of lynching him had they found him.
