Dumas, not alone Mobile, but Alabama, lost a magnificient citizen. Wilcox has seen not a few of her citizens go to the cities and in a remarkably short time gain the confidence of the people to such an extent as to be placed in the vanguard of the progressive set. So it was with Mr. Dumas. He went to Mobile a few years ago a stranger; he died there last week so honored and respected that Mobile's first paper, The Register, heads its first editorial column with this reference to the deceased: This community learned with regret yesterday morning of the death-after a short and seemingly slight illness-of Mr. Jere T. Dumas, one of Mobile's prominent cotton factors. Mr. Dumas has been a resident here but a few years, but has long been known to the mercantile interests as a citizen of Wilcox county. He was notably progressive both as a merchant and as citizen, ever ready to promote Mobile's welfare and doing his share in encouraging the growth of commerce and industry. Mobile has not too many men of this useful sort and suffers by his loss. - Mobile Register.
