J. Fail, Sr. Our community was greatly shocked on last Thursday morning, when it was learned that Mr. D. J. Fail, Sr., had been stricken with a desperate illness on Main street. Friends with whom he had been jesting only a moment before, carried him tenderly to the nearby drugstore of Messrs. Foster and Jones, where all that skill and loving hands could do, was done for him, but death had set its seal upon him, and in a little more than twenty-four hours, without ever having regained consciousness or being able to be taken to his home nearby, his sunny spirit had passed to the great beyond. Mr. Fail was born near Wilcox Landing in this county, Jan. 3rd, 1863. Bereft of a mothers' love and care almost in his infancy, and growing up in the hard times that followed the civil strife, with only such advantages as the home school gave, he yet attained to more that has fallen to the lot of many of our young men with far greater opportunities. Adversities and ill health for many years apparently made him only the more determined to succeed for his wife and children at home, that he might give them every comfort and luxury and fit them for an easier place in life's battles than had been his lot. It was in the home that his sunniest and best traits shone brightest. There all was gentleness and love. As can not be said of all of us, those who knew him best loved him most. He was the soul of honor and his word was his bond. Many are left who will miss his loving charity and deeds of kindness, and many hearts beat in tenderest love and sympathy for his bereaved family. Wilcox Progressive Era, Thursday, June 13, 1907 Dr. D. J. Fail, of Georgiana, arrived in Camden Thursday, having been called here by the death of his father.
