L. Hayes. - He died at his home in Boiling Springs on yesterday (Wednesday) morning at 4 o’clock. This is a deep source of regret and sorrow to his many friends. Wilcox Progressive Era, Thursday, June 2, 1904 In Memoriam. On Wednesday, May 25th, just as the day was dawning, the spirit of Mr. William L. Hayes, passed from this earth to that beautiful home beyond the skies. He was sick only a short while and his death came quite unexpectedly. He leaves five children, four sons and one daughter, one brother, besides a host of relatives and friends to mourn his loss. It is hard, so hard, to give up our loved ones, but what a comfort to know that though they can not come back to us we can go to them. Bereaved ones, it is hard to give up such a dear, good father, but just think for one moment-to-day he is a beautiful angel in heaven, where he will be waiting and watching to meet you, as one by one you gather home. What a glorious meeting, when he reached the Golden gate and found waiting there for him loved ones gone before. The family has lost from its chain a link that can only be united by the Comforter of broken hearts and they are tenderly referred in this their deep affliction to that source which never faileth. He was perfectly resigned to the Lord's will, and so patient in his suffering. He expressed himself as having no fear of death because the way was clear. May He whose presence was so precious to the father in his last days be a guide to his children all through life. "Be thou faithful unto death" and we shall meet him again whom we all loved. "He walks with you that angel kind And gently whispers "be resigned". Bear up, bear on, the end will tell. The dear Lord ordereth all things well." A RELATIVE Wilcox Progressive Era, Thursday, June 9, 1904 COL. W. L. HAYES William Lee Hayes, was born in Marengo County, Ala., in December, 1838, and died at his home in Boiling Springs, Wilcox County on Wednesday, May 24th, 1904. At the time of his death, Mr. Hayes was 67 years old. He was the son of W. S. W., and Violet Harris Hayes. In 1857 he moved to Wilcox County, and has since resided at his home in Boiling Springs. In 1866, after his return from the war, where he served in the 13th Alabama Infantry, having been captured at Gettysburg, after being severely wounded, he was held a prisoner, until peace was declared. Then he wooed and won as his bride, Miss Josephine A. Gamble of McKinley, and together they happily lived until Nov. 19, 1902, when Mrs. Hayes, wended her flight to higher realms. The surviving children are Miss Eula Hayes and Arthur, Robert, Clarence and Brooks Hayes. Mr Hayes was a large and successful planter, and stockman, and was generally esteemed for his integrity, hospitality and ready humor. He was always a true Democrat, and when men were needed Mr. Hayes was always found at the post of duty. In 1900, he was elected County Superintendent of Education, and was re- elected in 1902. In official life, he was honest, courteous and obliging, and his official acts will be found clear and true. About a week since Col Hayes was taken ill, and his death resulted from acute indigestion. His remains were buried beside his wife in McKinley. Mr. Charles B. Hayes is the only surviving brother. Col Hayes had a large circle of friends, who admired him for many manly traits of character, for he was hospitable, genial, obliging, and witty. His quick humor and ready reparice made him welcome wherever he went. In common with his friends, the Progressive Era tenders its sympathies to the bereaved family.
