Jones At a regular convention of Dale Lodge No. 25 of A.F. & A.M. at Camden, Ala., on Sept. 13th, 1903, a committee, consisting of the undersigned, was appointed to draft a brief paper commemorative of our late friend and brother, Gen'l, Richard Channing Jones. Gen'l Jones was a native of Virginia, born on April 12th, 1841, and in childhood came with his parents to Camden, Ala., and here he mainly spent his life until his death on the 12th of Sept. 1903. He graduated at the University of Ala., at Tuscaloosa in 1859, and soon thereafter studied law. In April 1861 he entered the Confederate Army and was a brave and faithful soldier until the end of the struggle. After the war he taught school in Camden for one year, and in 1866 he opened a law office in this town. In 1882 he was called by his people to serve them in the Senate of Ala., which he did for four years. In 1890 he was chosen by the Trustees to the Presidency of his ALMA MATER, the University of Tuscaloosa, and which position he accepted and filled until 1897, when he declined further service in that position. The honorary degrees of A.M. and L.L.D. were conferred upon him by the State University. He returned to Camden and resumed the practice of law. In 1901 he was chosen to represent this Senatorial District in the Constitutional Convention. At the time of his death he was commander of Camp Franklin K. Beck No. 224 of United Confederate Veterans, at Camden, Ala. In early life he united with the Baptist Church in this place and continued through life and exemplary member and deacon......
