When the war commenced Mr. D. A. K. McDowell volunteered in the Third Alabama Calvary and took this faithful old negro with him, who attended him through four long years of service. Every man in that regiment was Sidney's friend, and always had a kind word for him. Since the surrender he has been with his old master, who cared for him; and particularly in his old age, and in his last illness, and gave him a decent burial. This old man was 74 years old when he died. There is something peculiarly sad in seeing these faithful trustworthy darkies pass away as those who come after them will never take their places. There is a feeling in the hearts of all true Southerners, that makes them revere the memory of such negroes as was Sidney McDowell. "Peace be to his ashes."
