Mr. James P. Miller was accidentally shot by Dr. Ernest Bonner on Thanksgiving day, near Darlington "this County," while bird hunting. Nothing in our counties history has so shocked our community as this unexpected calamity. Leaving home in the early morning with the bloom of health mantling his cheek, to return in the evening with the pale shadow of death on his brow. The happy expectations of the morning was turned into gloom and sorrow in the evening for his family and friends, and the entire community sorrow with them in this unexpected calamity that has befallen them. Mr. Miller has lived in Wilcox County all his life. He was born at Oak Hill, May 25th, 1861. He was the third son of Rev. John Miller, D. D. Educated in the schools of Oak Hill and Camden. He gave 22 years of his past life to farming and merchandising at Darlington, this County. He was two years in business at Gadsden, Ala. Afterwards took a business course in an Atlanta College in 1884. He was married on the 25th day of Feb. 1897 to Miss Bertha Donald at Montery Butler County. He took up his residence in Camden in 1904 and entered the mercantile business as Senior Member of the firm of Miller and Dale. Mr. Miller was a member of the Associate Reform Presbyterian Church. He was a good man, a prosperous merchant, a worthy citizen and a sincere exemplary christian gentleman. In all the works of life, as husband, brother, citizen and friend, none knew him but admired the consistent honesty of his nature. Always patient, sympathetic, cheerful, thoughtful and just, and his death is a loss to the community and County. We extend our sympathy to his bereaved family and kindred, who, in the great day, when all secrets are made known, may then see and know, how for the best, Gods plans have worked in this sad affliction to them.
