Mr. Neil McArthur died Sunday morning, at the home of his brother, Mr. Jno. A. McArthur, in the Grampian Hill, of South Camden. Mr. McArthur was one of our most upright and honorable citizens and was highly regarded by all who knew him. He was born in Robertson County, North Carolina, Sept. 10, 1841. His father, the late John D. McArthur, moved to Alabama with his family when the son Neil was only one year old. Since that time the family has resided in the neighborhood of Camden. He entered the Confederate service when the war began and faithfully served his Southland as a Trooper in Co. D, 3rd Ala., Calvary until the close of the war. During service as a soldier he received a wound in his lungs from which he always suffered, but he was ever cheerful and had a quiet vein of humor in his disposition that always made his company exceedingly pleasant. He was well read on all subjects, and was a splendid business man. In politics, he was an old line Stonewall Jackson democrat. Mr. McArthur was a Free Mason, and had been Worshipful Master of the Lodge, High Priest of the Chapter, Thrice Illustrious Master of the Council and was also a Knight Templar. His private life was commensurate with his public career. He was known and recognized as God fearing, truthful man. He never married, but there was no one ever more devoted to his brothers and sisters, and to his friends. He was one of nature's noblemen, and in his death a void has been created in the hearts of those who knew him best, that can never be filled. Mr. McArthur is survived by one brother and two sisters, Mr. John A. McArthur, Mrs. Eades Dunn, Mrs. Ashley Holloman, of Bell's Landing and several neices and nephews. The funeral rites occurred at Canton Bend Cemetery, Rev. R. L. Robinson officiated. The beautiful ritual of Free Masonry was performed at the grave of him who had been a true man, son and brother, citizen and soldier, and had lived so that his memory will be frequently remembered in the years to come. Peace to his ashes. Additional Comments: Wilcox Progressive Era Newspaper Microfilm located at the Alabama Department of Archives and History, Montgomery, Alabama.
