George M. Pharr was born in Canton Bend, Ala., March 31st, 1829, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Northrup in Selma. The parents of Mr. Pharr were pioneers in this county, settling in Canton Bend when the country was comparatively an unbroken wilderness. He grew up in the halcyon days of Alabama when every planter was a King, every home a palace, when culture and refinement were the prerequisites of good society. Receiving a finished education and endowed with every requisite that constitutes a man and a gentleman he passed his long life of three fourths of a century beloved by all who knew him, a shining example of the true Christian and of unswerving honor and integrity. As man and boy the writer knew him for fifty years, listened often to his chaste and elegant language in conversation, in church and in the school room. On his character the shadow of a scandal never fell, no man could truthfully accuse him of any act unbecoming a Christian and a gentleman. A good man has passed away and the good that he did lives after him; while his death has saddened our hearts the recollection of his pure life and sterling qualities will always "gild a spot in memory's waste." His sorrowing children and friends know that beyond the veil that separates the two eternities is a home of endless peace over the threshold of which he has passed.
