Wilcox Progressive Era, Thursday, October 15, 1903

Mr. Smyly Killed
Mr. Ernest Smyly was on a visit to his brother, Mr. C. W. Smyly of 
Catherine, and was killed at this place by Train Tuesday morning, Oct. 
6th. We have heard none of the particulars of this sad accident, but 
extend to Mr. C. W. Smyly, brother of deceased, our sympathy, in this 
trying ordeal, brought about so unexpectedly, it is hard to give up 
our kin, even when wasted by disease, and we see no hope for them, but 
when in the prime of life, in robust and vigorous health, the blow 
comes with withering force, and catches us unprepared to realize fully 
its meaning, until we see our loved ones in deaths cold embrace, and 
know they have past into the Great Beyond, nothing there is left us, 
but patient resignation and the sympathy our friends and neighbors.
