J. Savage Dead. Mr. H. J. Savage died at Atmore at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. C. Gordon and was buried at Perdue Hill, Monroe County with Masonic honors on 7th day of May. He was one of the old land marks in Alabama particularly conspicuous in commercial circles since the forties. He merchandised in Camden, Clifton, Evergreen, Perdue Hill, and Walker Springs, before and since the war, he was noted for fair and correct dealings with his fellow- men, and had the confidence of those among whom he lived, he was true to his friends and generous in thought and action to those who, differed with him, on questions that came up in public or private life, he was public spirited and lived a life industry and usefulness, interested always in Masonic, Church, and School work, and his purse was always open to those who needed aid and he gave freely without ostentation, he was a consistent church member, a devout Mason, and in the walks of life an upright man. He married in Camden in his early life Miss Anna A. Jackson whose father was Probate Judge of Wilcox County, and when the war between the States commenced he enlisted in Jackson company 3rd Alabama Calvary, and gave to his country the best service that he could. He died well advanced in life in the eighties and leaves five sons and two daughters to mourn him, together with many friends and old comrades who hold in sacred memory many acts of kindness and generosity of him who has gone into another world.
