Mrs. J. D. Stillings, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Preston, was born in Wilcox county, Ala., December 20, 1859 and died at her home in Mobile, Ala., June 15, 1907. At the age of 17 she was happily married to John D. Stillings and to them were born eleven children, ten of whom are still living, Mrs. S. L. Wade, Mr. W. T. Stillings, Mr. E. H. Stillings, Mrs. W. T. Botter, Misses Buford, Gertrude, Mattie, Laura-Belle, Lee-Ala, and Lillian Stillings, all of Mobile. Her life as a mother will not soon pass out of the memory of those above mentioned. She believed absolutely in the Bible and accepted it as her soul's guide. As a wife and mother she has indeed been a model for all, for no pains were spared by her to make the home life of her family one of comfort. How strange that a life so precious, so full of service and joy should be cut short, she being sick only a few hours. It was indeed a fearful shock to her friends and relatives, and especially to her devoted husband and loving children. But our faith is in God, and we are trusting Him for a sweet reunion, where there shall be no partings, but rest from sin and earthly care. While this parting is hard, we know it is best, for God holds our destiny in his hands, and we are assured the work only in love and mercy. Resting in this conviction we are enabled to say "Thy will be done." Her remains were borne to our cemetery in Wilcox county, where her funeral was attended by a large concourse of weeping friends and relatives. The body now rests with kindred dust, thus her precious life is ended, but its influence shall abide forever. Her Child.
