Gossett & Ronald Jackson ===================================================================== March 2003 Ayers Cemetery Winston County, Alabama Directions: This cemetery is located 200 yards north of County Road 20. On Hwy. 13 in Delmar, turn onto County Road 20 and travel three-fourths of a mile. Turn left on a logging road, which makes a bend. Follow the bend and the cemetery will be on the right. The following is the only information in this cemetery: Ayers, Leonidas L. Died 7/11/1893 One, possibly two unmarked graves This is the history and a bit of information on Leonidas L. Ayers: A recently "re-discovered" cemetery has been found by members of the Winston County Genealogical Society. A Northwest Alabamian article several years ago states the following: "Boradus Elkins of near Haleyville, recently found a lone Civil War veteran's grave in a wooded area, off Winston County Road 20, one mile east of Delmar. On the marker this information was inscribed: L.L. Ayers, 23rd Regiment, Infantry, Indian. No date. No other burial plot was found in that area." A picture of the tombstone was also included in the article. WCGS members Ronald Jackson and Peter Gossett determined to find and include this cemetery in their accumulating list. Since that article was printed, Mr. Elkins has passed away and not many knew about it. Some even thought that this person must have been a Native American, though this has been proven false. However, not only was the cemetery found, but more information was collected too. From the "Civil War Soldiers and Sailors" database on the internet: Leonidas L. Ayers (Ayres), Company D, 23rd Regiment, Indiana Infantry, Union, Rank In: Corporal, Rank Out: Private, on film number M540, roll 3. From the "Winston County Register of Deaths (1888 - 1910)": Ayers, Leonidas L., born ?, died July 11, 1893, male, white, married, gauger, cause of death: meningitis, place of death: Beat 2, buried Delmar, AL, Informant: J.C. Taylor, M.D. From the "Ancestral Homesteads": Mr. Ayers had homesteaded 159.83 acres on December 15, 1892, months before he passed away (H8069). This land was located W1/2 of NE1/4 and E1/2 of NW1/4 all of township 10 south, range 10 west, section 21. Mr. Aderholt, who lives nearby, as a boy remembers the grave, along with three or four other graves. Although the NWA article states that there were no other burials in the area, the WCGS did find a stone that was in alignment with Mr. Ayers. Mr. Ayers was also Justice of the Peace in Winston County at one time.
