He gave a number of citizens. Samuel H. Nelson was named as a strong supporter of the Union Army. Additional Comments: Source: Southern Claims Commission Copy of John Penn's Application (There were more men from Winston Co.,Al. who served in the Union Army than the Confederate Army.Many of the men in that area were sons and grandsons of War of 1812 and Revolutionary vets. Many had served under Gen. Andrew Jackson and had strong ties to the United States.)
