For extraordinary heroism in action near Brieulles, France, November 4, 1918. When three of the boats supporting a pontoon bridge across the Meuse River were destroyed by artillery fire, he voluntarily waded into the stream to a depth of 4 feet, under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, and held up the deck of the bridge until new boats were launched and placed in position.
