Prominent among the old and respected citizens of Hico Township stands the name of J. R. McKinney, who was born in Pickens County, S. C., January 16, 1823, and is the son of John and Elizabeth (Robertson) McKinney, natives of North Carolina and South Carolina, respectively. The father was born in 1789, but was reared from seven years of age in South Carolina. He was married in this State, and here died September, 1873. He had followed agricultural pursuits all his life. The mother was born October 31, 1800, and is still living on the old farm in South Carolina. Of the ten children born to their marriage, nine grew to maturity and six are now living: Hester (Stewart), in South Carolina; Elizabeth E. (Penny), in Benton County; Kittie (Harper), in South Carolina; John H. C., minister and editor, in Indianapolis, Ind.; Josephine (Barron), in South Carolina, and J. R., who was reared in South Carolina, and remained with his parents until grown. He was married in Georgia, and followed agricultural pursuits in this State during the year 1858. In 1869 he moved to Benton County, Ark., and here has followed farming and stock raising. He is the owner of 320 acres of land, about 125 under cultivation. [p.865] August 26, 1856, he married Miss Mary E. Moseley, a native of Raburn County, Ga., and eleven children were born to them: Lawrence B., Maggie L., Lizzie (wife of Geo. A. Jones). John H., Cornelia, Julia, Robert, Emma, Claburn and two deceased. Mr. McKinney and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He is a Democrat in politics; is a Master Mason, was clerk of the county and supreme courts in Raburn County, Ga., and takes an active interest in political affairs.
