Sheffield, a prosperous young farmer, stock raiser and merchant at Robinson, Ark., was born at Horse Pasture, Henry Co., Va., February 19, 1846, and is a son of Thomas C. Sheffield, whose sketch is given in this work. He grew to manhood in Dallas County, Tex., and was educated there and in his native State. In the fall of 1863, at the age of seventeen years, he entered the service of Gen. Kirby Smith, at Shreveport, La., and served as his courier until the close of the war. He then returned to Texas, and engaged in farming on his father's homestead. In the spring of 1866 he came to Benton County, Ark., and was here married two years later to Mary E. Walker, who was born in Benton County in December, 1849, and by her became the father of three children: Jesse Thomas. William Leonard and Ellen Joan. Mr. Sheffield's means, when married, did not exceed $500, but by energy and perseverance he has accumulated a fine property. He has a good farm of 3071/2 acres, and a house and lot in Robinson, besides his stock of general merchandise, which amounts to about $1,800. He is a Master Mason, and he and family are attendants at the Christian Church.
