Funeral services were held late yesterday afternoon *************************************************************************** 3 July 1930 MRS. R. N. GODWIN Godwin, Snyder, Richardson Mrs. R. N. Godwin, aged 59, died Friday morning at 5 o'clock at the family residence. She was born in Mississippi and moved to Monticello at an early age, later moving to Warren. She is survived by her husband and seven children, R. M. Godwin of Akron, Ohio, Hubert R. Godwin of San Francisco, Olin S. Godwin of Little Rock and v. V. and M. W. Godwin, Mrs. Walton Snyder, and Mrs. Grady Richardson, all of Warren, one sister and three brothers. The funeral was held at the family home and burial was in Oakland cemetery Sunday afternoon. **************************************************************************** 3 July 1930 MRS. HELEN ERWIN HAYGOOD Haygood, Erwin, Brown, Jackson Mrs. Kermit Haygood, nee Helen Erwin, of Blue Springs community died June 10 after an illness of about five weeks. She was born September 26, 1914. She is survived by her husband, her father and step mother, Mr. and Mrs. Hubbard Erwin of Blue Springs; four sisters , Mrs. Rufus Brown of Camden, Mrs. Wesley Jackson of Ingalls, and Misses Evelyn and Gurtha Erwin of Blue Springs; one brother, Lester Erwin of Benton. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Lee Mosley Burial was at Williams cemetery. ***************************************************************************** 3 July 1930 MARY BIRD SCOBEY Scobey, Price, Morris, Moseley, Witlshire, Hodge, Childers. Murphy, Capplemon, Gardner Mrs. Mary Bird Scobey, Aged 75, Had Lived in County 70 years. After an illness extending over several weeks, Mrs. Mary Bird Scobey died at the family residence in this city at 5:30 p. m., June 25, 1930. In the death of Mrs. Scobey, this city and county has lost another pioneer citizen and beloved character. She was born at Danceville, Tennessee, August 28, 1854, the daughter of John B. and Mary Price. About the year 1859, she came with her parents to Arkansas. They settled what is known as the Price place, which is located about two miles North of Warren. On January 16, 1871, she was married to John C. Scobey, Mr. Scobey died in 1916. Of their marriage ten children were born, and all of whom survive, except one son, Travis Scobey, who died on April 27, 1928. Her surviving children and their places of residence are: Henry Scobey, Sunnyside, Calif., Booby Scobey , John Scobey, Charles Scobey, and Fred Scobey, all of Warren; Mrs. Inez Morris, Mrs. Will Moseley, and Mrs. A. P. Witlshire all of Warren, and Mrs. J. K. Hodge of Crossett. In addition to her own children, Mrs. Scobey reared two orphan children, namely, Mrs. Rhoda Childers of Kingsland, who survives her, and Ben Murphy, who died some years ago. Two sisters, Mrs. Emma Capplemon of Dumas, Miss., and Mrs. Mattle Gardner of National City, California and one brother, A. J. Price of Warren survive Mrs. Scobey. She leaves also thirty-two grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mrs. Scobey was one of the best known women in this city and county. For years she was very active, and conducted one of the most popular board houses in Warren. In her later years, she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. A. P. Wiltshire. She was a faithful member of the First Methodist Church in Warren for thirty-two years. The funeral services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. W. Waddill, at the First Methodist Church at 4 o'clock p. m., June 26, and interment was had at Oakland cemetery. Honorary pall-bearers were: Carl Hollis, S. B. Meek, H. E. Bond, Dr. Chas. Martin, Chas Beard, W. D. Roddey, J. R. Quinney, Sam Howard, W. E. Broughton, W. S. Goodwin, Noel Martin, W. A. Williams and V. C. Ford. Active pall-bearers were: O. W. Petway, L. J. Burbridge, Gordon Harrison, D. L. Purkins, J. E. Victor, Taylor Earle, M. C. Singer, and A. T. Davis. Those in charge of the flowers were: Mrs. Harry Wells, Mrs. W. R. Appleton, Mrs. Norman Berry, Mrs. Ralph Garrison, Mrs. Gertrude Hughes and Mrs. Ida Ross. ****************************************************************************** 10 July 1930 TOM FORREST Sumpter---Tom Forrest, aged 79, died July 1st, at his son's Sell Forrest. He is survived by seven children; Ed Forrest, Sell Forrest, Mrs. V. Savage, Mrs. Bythel Trussell, Mrs. ?? Beasley, all of this place, and ?? Forrest of Houston, Texas. The burial was at the Smerna cemetery Wednesday afternoon. ****************************************************************************** 17 July 1930 REV. I. P. LANGLEY Langley, Westbrook, Axley, Casse, Dunwoody The Rev. I. P. Langley of Jefferson City, Mo., father of Mrs. O. O. Axley of this city died at his home Sunday. He had been ill health for some time. Rev. Langley was well known in this state, having served as pastor in Beebe, Hope, Texarkana, and other Arkansas cities. He had also served as pastor in Missouri and Illinois cities. For the past eight years he had been chaplain of the Missouri state prison at Jefferson City. He is survived by his wife, four daughters, Mrs. A. Westbrook of Little Rock, Mrs. O. O. Axley of Warren, Mrs. P. Casse of New Orleans, La., and Mrs. Harry Dunwoody of Ontario, Cal., a son, Charles E. Langley of Popular Bluff, Mo., and several grandchildren. ***************************************************************************** 17 July 1930 CHARLIE WILKINS Negro Man Dies From Knife Wound Wilkens Charlie Wilkins, Negro aged about 25, died about noon Sunday as the result of knife wound inflicted about 2 o'clock by Grace Minneweather, Negro woman of about the same age. It is said that the two had quarreled and that the woman cut Wilkins across the neck with a pocket knife. The woman was arrested Sunday morning by Marshal W. A. Williams and Constable R. L. Hoyle, and is being held in the Bradley County jail on a charge of murder. ***************************************************************************** 17 July 1930 ELVIN TROTTER Trotter, Thompson, Wheeler Elvin Trotter, aged 25, died at his home in Hermitage, Friday, June 27. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the home of his sister, Mrs. N. B. Wheeler, with Rev. C. E. Barton, pastor of the Baptist Church of Hermitage, officiating. Interment was at Hollis Special cemetery. Elvin was born May, 1905, in Monitcello, the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Trotter. They moved to Hermitage nineteen years ago and Mr. Trotter preceded his son in death by several years. Elvin joined the Baptist church in 1930 and continued active in its service until the time of his death. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. T. R. Trotter; three sisters, Mrs. Carl Thompson, Mrs. N. B. Wheeler, and Miss Vera Trotter; and three brothers, C. G. Trotter, Tommye Trotter, and Wilson Trotter, all of Hermitage. ****************************************************************************** 24 July 1930 GULLEY CARTER Carter, Cooper Gulley Carter, aged 26, prominent ??ung farmer living about eight miles northwest of Warren died Sunday afternoon at 1:10 o'clock in a local hospital, following an operation for appendicitis. He was born and reared in Bradley County where he spent all but about two years of his life. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. G. Murry of Sheridan before an unusually large gathering of friends and relatives of the deceased. Burial was at the Mosley cemetery. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Carter; three sisters, Misses Dollie and Ruby Jane Carter, and Mrs. Robert Cooper of this county and three brothers, Warren and Frank Carter of Akron, Ohio, and of ???Carter of this county. ******************************************************************************* 24 July 1930 REV. R. W. MCKAY, VETERAN MINISTER, DIED MONDAY P. M. McKay, Morgan, Sellers, Sage Aged Minister Served as Methodist Pastor in Warren For Four Years Rev. R. W. McKay, father of Cline McKay and Methodist pastor in Warren for four years; died at his home in Cabot at 6:45 Monday night, after a long illness. He was 66 years of age. He had spent 35 years in the ministry and was forced by ill health to relinquish active service in 1925. He had served many churches, including the Winfield Memorial church in Little Rock, and had been presiding elder of two Methodist districts, and a member of two college boards. Funeral services were held at 10:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Cabot Methodist church, in charge of Rev. James Thomas, providing elder of the Little Rock district. Burial was at Mr. Carmel cemetery. Methodist minister of the Little Rock churches served as honorary pall-bearers. Mr. McKay was a native of Yorkville, S. C. He came to Arkansas with his parents in 1870, or when six years old, and lived on a farm at Austin, three miles from here. He was ordained in 1889 at Mount Tabor and became connected with the White River circuit. He was married to Miss Mary Francis Morgan in 1888. The following circuits and pastorates have been served by the Rev. Mr. McKay: White River, two years; Stuttgart, two years; Rison, three years; Northville, two years; Waldo, four years; Fordyce, four years; Prescott, four years; Winfield Memorial church, Little Rock, two years; Arkadelphia, three years, and Warren four years. He was presiding elder of the Camden district four years and of the Monticello district three years. His religious career includes two years spent as missionary secretary of the Little Rock conference and two years as educational secretary. For more than a quarter of a century he had been a member of the board of trustees of Hendrix-Henderson College, Conway. He was a member of all the Methodist education boards and was on the executive boards of Hendrix-Henderson and Galloway Colleges until illness forced his retirement in 1925. He is survived by his widow; four daughters, Mrs. Lois Dean of Cabot; Mrs. Effie Morgan of Vienna, Austria; Mrs. Marle Sellers of Russellville and Miss Catherine McKay of Little Rock; one son, Robert Cline McKay of Fort Smith; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. McKay of Cabot; five sisters, one brother, three grandchildren. Only one member of the Little Rock conference who began work with the Rev. Mr. McKay survives, the Rev. J. A. Sage of Prescott. ******************************************************************************* July 30, 1930 MRS. MATTIE VIRGINIA FRAZER Mrs. J. M. Frazer Dies Wednesday Lifelong Resident of Warren, Aged 63, Dies at 2:30 A. M. Mrs. Mattie Virginia Frazer, aged 63, the wife of J. M. Frazer, died at the family residence in this city at 2:30 o'clock, a. m., Wednesday, July 30. She had been ill for several months., Mrs. Frazer was born in Warren March 5, 1867. She was the daughter of James and Fanny Hall. She spent all of her life in this city. When she was three years old, her mother died, and she was reared by her aunt Mrs. Sue Turner, of Warren, who survives her. She was married to J. M. Frazer in this city on May 2, 1888. Of the seven children, born of their marriage; six survive her, namely, J. B. Frazer, Mrs. Monroe Brown and Elbert Frazer of Warren; Hall Frazer of Little Rock; Mrs. R. L. Harley and Herman Frazer of Pine Bluff. Mrs. Frazer had been a member of the Warren Methodist church since early in her childhood. The funeral will be conducted by Rev. A. W. Waddill of the Methodist church and Rev. G. L. Boles of the Baptist church, at the family residence at ten o 'clock this morning. Interment will be had at Oakland cemetery. The honorary pall-bearers will be: Henley S. Turner, Nick Turner, Gus Turner, Tobe Turner, Arthur Weiss, E. L. Harley, Rufus Martin, Rufus Meek, and Norman Berry. Active pall-bearers will be: W. E. Moseley, E. I. Hankins, M. B. McLeod, Joe Thompson, M. C. Singer, Chas. Scobey, Louis Ederington and Z. K. Thomas. Ladies in charge of the flowers will be Mrs. Cliff Hart of Pine Bluff, Mrs. E. I. Hankins, Mrs. Norman Berry, Mrs. M. B. McLeod, Mrs. P. E. W. Wiggins, died Friday, July 25. She was born October 30, 1917. She was an active worker in B. Y. P. U. and in Sunday school class. She is survived by her father and mother, two brothers, one sister, and one-half brother and two half-sisters, all of Warren. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. N. Taylor and Rev. G. L. Bradley, aged 63, formerly of Warren, died in Vienna, La., Monday, August 4 ,1930, at 1 p. m. He moved from Warren to Ruston, La. in 1928, and later to Vienna, La., and was living there at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nola Bradley, and nine children, R. L. Bradley of Trinidal, Texas, Clifton R. Bradley of Porum, Oklahoma, Mrs. J. B. Turner of Warren, Arkansas, Mrs. J. H. Temple of Warren, Arkansas, Mrs. Lee Temple of Warren. Mrs. Bratton Ivey of Warren, Mrs. R. L Iklond of Monroe, La., and Misses Sue Belle and Dorris Bradley of Vienna; one sister, Mrs. Jim Etheridge of Warren and D. H. Bradley, also of Warren. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church at Vienna, conducted by Rev. Ball and Weever. Butler, aged 82 years died August 4th in Houston, Texas. Miss Butler was a sister of the late H. F. Butler and for several years conducted a millinery shop in Warren. She was a member of the local M. E. Church and Eastern Star. She left Warren eighteen years ago,. Frank Butler attended the funeral in Houston, the burial was in Seabreeze, Fla. ***************************************************************************** 21 August 1930 MISS DORIS DUMAS Miss Doris Dumas, aged 23, died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Dumas, last Friday evening at 1 o'clock after a brief illness. Miss Dumas had an operation for appendicitis about ten days prior to her death and suffered a relapse. She had been employed for three years by the Bradley Store in the Bradley County Parlor. She was a member of the Baptist Church of Warren. She is survived by her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Dumas and one brother, Lonie, all of Warren. Funeral services were held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at Moseley cemetery at Parnell Springs under the direction of Frazer Funeral Home. The Rev. J. G. Murray of Sheridan was in charge. Pall-bearers were: Lem Hill, Riley Bryant, Carl Martin, Alex Moseley, Jim Taylor and Oliver Carter. ***************************************************************************** 21 August 1930 MRS. L. S. GUICE Mrs. L. S. Guice, aged 46, died at her home Thursday night after a lingering illness of several months. She was a member of the Baptist Church of Warren. Frazier Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements and burial services were held at Oakland cemetery at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon with the Rev. G. L. Boles in charge of the services. Mrs. Guice is survived by five children. ***************************************************************************** 21 August 1930 OTIS WALKER Otis Walker, son of Mrs. J. J. Wright of Warren, aged 42 died Monday afternoon after a lingering illness of more than five years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Warren. Mr. Walker is survived by his mother, Mrs. J. J. Wright, three children, and one brother, George Walker, all of Warren. Frazer Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements and burial was at Ebenezer cemetery at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. E. A. Hollingsworth of Warren was in Charge of the services. ***************************************************************************** August 1930 LLOYD WOLFE Goose Ankle-- Lloyd Wolfe age forty died at his home near Star City August 31st. He is survived by his wife and fourteen children. Mr. Wolfe was born and reared in this community and leaves a host of relatives and friends. Burial was at William's Cemetery ***************************************************************************** 25 September 1930 RUFUS BEARD Rufus Beard, aged 45, was found dead Wednesday morning at his home about eight o'clock. It is believed that he died from a heart attack. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Beard and belonged to one of the county's oldest families. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Jerry Wells, of Dallas, Texas.
