Neff, a member of the firm of Shaner & Neff, general merchants of Berryville, Ark., is a native of Virginia, born in Rockingham County, on November 29, 1861. His parents. John and Amanda (Burkholder) Neff, were natives of Virginia, the former of Roanoke County and the latter of Rockingham County. John Neff resided in his native State until the spring of 1882, when he removed to Kansas. Locating in Allen County, of that State, he remained there until his death in December, 1884. Flavius J. R. Neff grew to manhood in the Old Dominion. Coming West in 1882, he first located in Clay County, Mo., and engaged in farming. In the fall of 1883 he came to Arkansas, and located at Denver, Carroll County. Here, in partnership with Mr. Shaner, [p.1066] he engaged in merchandising, and was soon after appointed deputy postmaster, which position he filled as long as he remained in Denver. He settled in Berryville in January, 1886, and with Mr. Shaner established their present business. They carry a large stock of goods, have an established trade and do a fine general mercantile business. Mr. Neff is a member of Berryville Lodge No. 82, I. O. O. F., and is now serving as Noble Grand.
