He departed this life Friday, August 11, 2006, in Eureka Springs, at the age of 98. He attended high school in Galveston, Texas and enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in the 13th Attack Squadron of the 3rd Attack Group stationed at Fort Crockett, Texas, serving one year. He then transferred to the Philippine Islands and was assigned to the 28th Bombardment Squadron at Nicholsfield in Manila, working as an aircraft radio operator repairman until 1941. He returned to the US and was assigned to the 34th School Squadron, Scott Air Force Base, as an instructor in aircraft radio operator mechanic. In 1946, he returned to the Philippines and was assigned to the 8th Communication Squadron at Clark Air Force Base until to the 8th Communication Squadron at Clark Air Force Base until 1947, when he was returned to Scott Air Force Base and was assigned to the 367th Technical Training Squadron until 1949, transferring to Japan in the Air and Air Force Communication Wings as Station Chief at Tageu, Korea, as Air Traffic Control and Ground Control Approach for 27 months. Upon his return to the U.S., he was again station at Scott Air Force Base where he remained until 1959 when he retired. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Eureka Springs. He is survived by his niece, Sharon Tipton of Santa Fe, Texas; and his caregiver, Patty Davidson of Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Madeline Illian. On March 3, 1966, he was united in marriage with Gladys Bell (Foley) Illian who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Grace Illian, Ruth Marie Illian, Maud Illian, and an infant; and three brothers, Harry Lee Illian, Roy Illian and an infant. A celebration of Mr. Illian's life will be on his 99th birthday, 6:00 P.M. September 12th, 2006 at the Inn of the Ozarks.
