All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm *********************************************************** Published: Harrison Daily Times Saturday, December 12, 2009 6:08 AM Dorthy "Dottie" Besse McKim of Santa Maria, Calif., was born July 9, 1922, in Enon, a daughter of Henry Oliver and Alta (Parton) Besse. She departed this life Wednesday Dec. 2 (2009) at Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria, Calif., at the age of 87 years. Dorthy is survived by one son, Joy K. Dodd of Union, Neb.; a son-in-law, Stephenson V. and wife, Elena McKim of Poway, Calif.; three grandchildren, Shannon and husband, John Clayton of Omaha, Neb., Shane and wife, Liza Dodd of Green River, Wyo. and Bryan McKim and wife of Poway, Calif.; eight great- grandchildren, Misty Vaughan of North Hollywood, Calif., Derik Vaughan of Tulsa, Okla., Timothy Dodd, Nina Dodd and Adam Dodd of Green River, Wyo. and Javin McKim, Abryl McKim and Skyler McKim of Poway, Calif.; one brother, Bill Besse of Alpena; and many nieces, nephews and friends. On June 17, 1979, she was united in marriage with Victor McKim who preceded her in death. Dorthy and Victor spent 29 loving years together and were faithful to AA and church. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Alta Besse; two husbands, Russell Dodd of Alpena and John Cowart of Omaha; two brothers, Bob Besse of Alpena and Glen Besse of Alpena; one half-sister, Ruth Riddle of Alpena; one half-brother Harold Jones of Wichita, Kan.; and one step-son, Johnny Cowart of Omaha. Dorthy taught school at Bobo in a one-room schoolhouse, was a creative homemaker and was featured in an article in National Geographic Magazine in the November 1970 edition. Dorthy was also a cancer survivor of more than 30 years. Visitation was held Friday, Dec. 4, at Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary in Santa Maria, Calif. Cremation followed immediately with ashes spread at sea.
