(Title Page) PREFACE ------------- The Form of Government of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church directs that every Session keep a full register of its Proceedings, and report the same to the Presbytery at least once each year. To secure uniformity in the mode of keeping these records, at the request of a number of members, the Board of Publication have prepared this Book. ------------- SPECIMEN OF RECORDS ------------- We present the following as a proper method of recording the Minutes of the Session: MINUTES OF SESSION 1869. Nov. !rst. The Session met ____ 7 o’clock P.M. Present – John D_____, Moderator, with Elders A_____, B_____ and C_____, The meeting was opened with prayer. The minutes of the last meeting were read. E_____, F_____, and R______ having given satisfactory evidence of their conversation to God by His Holy Spirit, were admitted to full membership in this Church. It appearing that common fame charges James D____ with unchristian conduct in several particulars, the Moderator and Elder A____ were appointed a committee to confer with him and report to the Session at its next meeting. Robert S____ appeared before the Session and preferred certain charges against Charles P_____. After hearing the charges, the Session directed its Clerk to give the accused a copy of the same, with the names of the witnesses supporting them, and cite all concerned to appear at the next meeting of the Session. Elder B___ and C___ were appointed to visit Mrs. W____ and family, and afford such relief as may be needed. Elder B____ was appointed to attend the next meeting of Presbytery, and Elder C____ his alternate. On motion of Elder A____, Session adjourned. Bryant, Eliza Powell The minutes of Sessions are lost from the organization to the reorganization in 1866 from that time they will be found in the old book which is layed away as a book of reference W.T. Jaggars P 3 MINUTES OF SESSION 1884 Hickory grove Dorsey Co, Ark May 4th The session met at 11 o’clock A.M. Present Josiah Willmon Moderator with Elders J.A. Shell and W.T. Jaggars. After divine service the congregation went into an election for one deacon and one elder which resulted in the election of John A. Wilson as elder and Thomas J. Wilson as deacon who were immediately ordained, the Rev. J.J. Wilson leading in the ordination. John A. Wilson was elected clerk of the Session Session closed by prayer Jsiah Willmon, Mod W.T. Jaggars After divine service the door of the church was opened and the following Brothers and Sisters came forward and united with the church. Brothers R.B. Rhodes and R.M. Shell and John A. Wilson. The Meeting was opened with prayer after divine Service the Church went into the election of an elder which resulted in the election of R.M. Chambers (The ordination Service was conducted by Rev. J.J. Wilson by request of the pastor) Elder John Shell was elected to represent Said church at the next meeting of presbytery and elder W.T. Jaggars his alternate. It appearing that common (unreadable) charged A.G. Jones with unchristian conduct the Moderator appointed J.A. Shell and R.M. Wilson Clerk P 7 MINUTES OF SESSION 1885 Hickory grove Dorsey Co Ark Feb 6th The Session met at 7 oclock P.M. Pres. Rev. J.J. Wilson Moderator with Elders W.T. Jaggars R.M. Chambers and J.A. Wilson the Meeting was opened with prayer by the Moderator. Elder R.M. Chambers was elected to attend the next meeting of presbytery and Elder W.T. Jaggars his alternate. The committee appointed to confer with brother A.G. Jones in regard to certain rumors being ready reported verbally. The report was as follows brother Jones said that he did get drunk and get drunk on purpose and was not sorry for it, if he had it to do over would do the same thing, and wanted the session to grant him a trial and motion the report was received and charges conferred against him for drunkenness. Thursday before the third Sunday in March which is the 12 day of March at 3 P.M. Was the time set for trial. The session adjourned with prayer. Rev. J.J. Wilson Md. J.A. The church went into the selection of a pastor for the next presbyterial year which resulted in the choice of Rev. J.J. Wilson and being but too Elders present the election of a represenitive to the next presbytery was pospined to some time in the near future the session adjourned. J.A. Chambers and W.T. Jaggars. After divine Service the Moderator presented a written request from brother J.A. Wilson calling for a letter which was granted. Jaggars after divine Service a request was presented from T.G. Taylor and wife calling for letters which was granted adjourned by benediction by the Mod (Louis Julian, Mod ( W.T. Jaggars C.S. P 13 MINUTES OF SESSION 1887 Hickory grove Cleveland Co Ark Aug 6 The Session met 11 oclock A.M. Present Louis Julian Moderator with Ruling Elders J.A. Shell R.M. Chambers and W.T. Jaggars with the following brethren of the Shady grove Session (invited by the Moderator to assist in Settling certain grievances in the church.) John West James Watts Westly Green W.H. Sullivent and Ambros Daniel. Previous to this time the Moderator had offered a covenant to this effect “That I am willing to let the past go with the past and if I have wronged any one I am sorry of it and am willing to forgive any wrong that may have been done to me, promising at the Same time that any whos grievances were so great that they could not make this agreement that if they would complain to him or any member of the Session the matter Should be investigated complaints were made by Sister L.E. Wilson but ruled out by the moderator on the grounds that the business of Estates was settled in (end of page) P 14 MINUTES OF SESSION 1888 Hickory grove Cleveland Co Ark Aug 7 The Session met 11 A.M. present Louis Julian Moderator with Ruling Elders R.M Chambers and W.T. Jaggars was elected principal and R.M. Chambers alternate delegate to attend the meeting of Presbytery at Camp Creek embracing the first Sunday in Nov 1887. Jaggars the Door of the Church was opined at which time came Jno S & Finis E. Williams and united with the church by experience and were baptised by effusion by Rev. J.J. Wilson. S.Lee Shell Mod with ruling elders R.M. Chambers and W.T. Jaggars. The door of the church was opened at which time came Eliza Daniel and united with the church by experience. Session closed by prayer S. Lee Shell Mod W.T. Jaggars C.S. 1889 Oct 6 Session was called to order after divine Service present S. Lee Shell Mod with ruling elders R.M. Chambers and W.T. Jaggars the first business was to elect a delegate to presbytery which resulted in the choice of R.M. Chambers principal and W.T. Jaggars alternate. The congregation then went into the choice of a Preacher which resulted in the unamimous choice of Bro. S. Lee Shell who proposed to preach to us two Sundays in each month for forty dollars the Deacon immediately took subscriptions to the amount of forty four dollars Session closed by prayer. Examined in Presbytery Oct 26 and found in good order Committee P 18 MINUTES OF SESSION 1890 Hickory grove Cleveland Co Ark July 8 Session met 8 oclock P.M. as per call of the Moderator Session called to order opened by prayer Present S. Lee Shell Mod with ruling Elders R.M. chambers and W.T. Jaggars. At which time complaints were heard against Sisster L.E. Wilson after hearing said complaints which were thought to be sufficient to sustain charges therefore charges were redressed to writing and a copy of said charges with the names of witnesses time of trial ordered served on the accused. Brother J. A. Shell of Amity Congregation was appointed to prosecute the case. There being no further business session adjourned to meet on Saturday July 19th at 10 oclock a.m. for trial on said charges adjourned by the Moderator S. Lee Shell Mod W.T. Jaggars C.S. P 19 MINUTES OF SESSION 1890 Hickory grove Cleveland Co Ark July 19 Session met 10 oclock a.m. opened with prayer present S.L. Shell Moderator with ruling elders R.M. Chambers and W.T. Jaggars Bro J.A. Wilson of Amity congregation was present and Set in council with us. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved It being the time for trial in the case against Sister L.E. Wilson and all parties having been duly cited and being present the court proceeded to trial by first appointing bro G. E. Greer of Amity congregation as prosecution in leu of bro J.A. Shell who was not present the prosecution was conducted in a mild Chistian Spirit. The evidence was taken and duly considered after which the court decided that the charges were sutained and on motion Said Sister was censured by being suspended indefinitely There being no further business the Session adjourned Prayer by bro G.E.
