Goodspeed Publishers, 1891. pg 41 Alfred Adams, of McLaren Township, is one of the self made men of Conway County. He was born here on March 17, 1834, and is a son of one of the very earliest pioneers of this section. During the period of our subject's youth the educational facilities of this section were very meagre, and in the hard struggle of carving a homestead in the forest, Alfred had other duties to attend to other than spending much time at school. He began the actual struggle for his own maintenance at the age of 18 years, when he worked at farm labor for wages. In July, 1855, he was united in marriage to Lucretia Greer, a native of Tennessee, and to this union were born two children, Mary and William. Both these children and their mother passed to their eternal home years ago. On August 31, 1876, Mr. Adams was again married; this time to Sarah J. Greer, a sister of his former wife. Cordelia M. was the only child born to this union, and this wife died on May 25, 1889. Our subject is one of the prosperous farmers of his township. He has a good farm of 160 acres well stocked and improved, and fifty acres under a high state of cultivation. Mr. Adams holds church membership in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and for years has been one of the active and enterprising citizens of his community. He has seen many changes in Conway County, having been born here fifty-six years ago. All the development of this section has practically come under his observation. It must be some satisfaction to look across the years that have gone, and contrast the past with the present; whereas, with our subject, he can reflect that he has contributed in some small degree to bring these changes about.
