Brown one of the representative citizens and enterprising farmers of Union Township, is a native of that township, and was born in the year 1850, being a son of Prof. Allen Brown who was a native of the State of New York, but when a boy was taken by his parents to Ohio, where he probably grew to manhood, and while yet a young man he left the parental roof to seek his fortune in the then sparsely settled region of the West. And perhaps as early as the year 1845 he landed in Conway County, where he was married in about 1846 to Miss Eveline Stell, who was a native of Guimmick County, Georgia, but came with her parents. Judge Robert and Winnie (Gentry) Stell, to Conway County in 1835. (See sketch of M. L. Stell.) Mr. Brown spent the remainder of his life in Conway County as one of its most successful educators. But he was not permitted long to engage in his useful profession. He was called to his eternal home in the height of his usefulness, in the year 1852. Mrs. Brown married Henry Durham, deceased, for her second husband. She died in 1883, after many years a worthy member of the M. E. Church, South. She was the mother of three children, viz.: Mary, the widow of E. L. Vaughan, deceased; Robert M., the subject of our sketch, and Wm. H., now of Van Buren County. Robert was reared to manhood on a farm, with nothing but the schools of the neighborhood from which to obtain an education. He remained at home with his mother till 1874, when he married Miss Ella Bell, a native of Tennessee. Her parents, Hugh M. and Minerva Bell, immigrated from Tennessee to Van Buren County, Ark, and in 1871 removed to Conway County, where Mr. Bell died in 1875. Mrs. Bell is still living, both being members of the Christian Church. Mr. and Mrs. Brown are the parents of seven children, of whom two sons and four daughters are living. Mr. Brown now resides about three miles southwest of Springfield, where his grandfather, Judge Stell, settled many years ago. He is the owner of 160 acres, with about 105 acres under a good state of cultivation, the most of which he has cleared himself. It is one of the most pleasant country homes in the vicinity. Mr. Brown is a Democrat in polities, and both he and Mrs. Brown are consistent members of the M. E. Church, South.
