Goodspeed Publishers, 1891. page 74 John M. Hill, the subject of this brief sketch, is a farmer of Union Township, and was born in Marshall County, Alabama, in 1845 or 1846. His father, Samuel Hill, was born in Jackson County, Alabama, November 8, 1813, and his mother, Jemima Kennamer, was a native of Marshall County, Alabama. In 1860 they came to Conway County and settled on a small improvement, where John M. now resides. Mr. Hill died in that neighborhood on March 26, 1879, his wife having preceded him in 1878. Mr. Hill was a farmer by occupation; was Justice of the Peace some years in Alabama, and was a soldier in the Federal army, belonging to an independent company in the Third Arkansas, which operated in this State. His father, John Hill, was born in North Carolina, but died in Marshall County, Alabama, where he had lived many years; he was of German and Welsh descent. John M. Hill is one of thirteen children, he and two sisters living; was reared to farm life without the advantage of an education, not being able to read or write until after the war. He came with his parents to this county, and on October 28, 1863, joined the Federal army and served about four months in Arkansas, in Company G of the Third Arkansas Cavalry, taking part in many severe skirmishes, and was once wounded in the right arm. He was married on October 13, 1867, to Martha J., a daughter of Andrew J. and Lucinda Lockhart, who were born in Morgan County, Alabama, and in Tennessee respectively; married in Alabama, and in 1860 came to Conway County. Mr. Lockhart died at Helena in 1862 while in the service of the Union in Company B, First Arkansas Infantry, Mr. Lockhart is still living, and is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Hill was born in Walker County, Alabama, and is the mother of nine children, three sons and four daughters living. Mr. and Mrs. Hill are Cumberland Presbyterians. Since his residence in Arkansas, Mr. Hill has resided in his present neighborhood, and since 1880 on the old home farm of 80 acres on Cedar Creek. Mr. Hill is a Republican in politics, and a member of Napier Post of the G. A. R. at Center Ridge.
