He was born in Tennessee in 1835; his parents died before he was 2 years old, and he was taken by R. Howard and brought to Conway County, Arkansas, in 1837. He was, some time later, taken by Hawkins Gregory (after whom Gregory Township is named) and reared. On attaining his majority he began life for himself, with very slender means. He soon after (in 1856) married, and to the union of himself and wife were born nine children, named in order of birth; M. D., John H., Sarah F. (deceased), George L. (deceased), Margaret J., Henry M. (deceased), Mary A. (deceased), Charles and Luther. Mrs. Houstion died January 30, 1884, and soon after our subject was married the second time. This union resulted in the birth of five children, named Effie and Jeffie (twins who died in infancy), Edward, John A. and Bolivar. Mr. H. is the possessor of a good farm, with seventy acres under cultivation. He is a very active member of the Masonic fraternity, and is a Royal Arch Mason. He has represented his Lodge in the Grand Lodge, and in the Masonic school he has held various Lodge offices, and the civil office of Justice of Gregory Township for four years. He and Mrs. H. are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, in which he holds the office of Elder.
