Goodspeed Publishers, 1891. page 77 H. M. Howser, of the mercantile firm of H. M. Howser & Co., general merchants at Cleveland, is a native of this county, having been born here on March 19, 1862. His parents, John T. and Sarah L. (Phyfer) Howser, were natives of North Carolina. Besides the subject of this sketch, they are the parents of seven other children, all living in this State but one, who resides in Oklahoma. Mr. Howser, Sr., is a planter by occupation. Came to Arkansas from Mississippi in 1860, and settled at Lewisburg. He has always been active an enterprising man; has held the office of Constable, and both he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Our subject was educated at Quitman, Ark., and at the age of 20 years began life for himself by teaching school, and followed that occupation for two years. He then began clerking, which he followed till 1885, when he engaged in business for himself, with a capital of $1500; the firm now have a capital of over $7000, and do a most encouraging annual trade, which is rapidly increasing in volume. He was married November 23, 1882, to Miss Zora Nichols, a native of Mississippi. To this union have been born four children: Gertrude, Luther and two who died in infancy. Mr. Howser is a member of the Masonic fraternity. Royal Arch Mason, Cleveland Lodge, No. 473, of which Lodge he is the Secretary. Mrs. Howser is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Mr. Howser, though a young man, is proving by his shrewdness and enterprise, his title to be classed among the leading merchants of the county.
