His parents, Philip and Mary (Windom) James, were the parents of nine children, named: David (deceased), William M, (deceased), Mary E. (deceased), John H. (deceased), Samuel P. (deceased), Peyton H. (deceased), Sarah C. (wife of W. T. Bird), Caroline (wife of James Huett), and D. M., the subject of this sketch. Father was a farmer by occupation, and resided in Mississippi till his death in 1867; he had been preceded by Mrs. James, who died in 1864; she had been a member of the M. E. Church, South. Our subject was mainly educated in Arkansas, having come to this State with his brothers and sisters soon after his father's death. When he attained his majority he began farming for himself on eighty acres and with very limited equipment. He has since thriven, and now as before stated, is engaged in commercial business in connection with his farming operations. He is enterprising and progressive, and takes an active part in all public improvements.
