Jones, dealer in general hardware, tinware, stoves, farm implements, machinery, etc., at Morrilton since 1884, carrying a stock to the value of about $7000, with an annual business of about $25,000. Mr. Jones owes his birthplace to the State of Pennsylvania, where he was born in December, 1845, a son of Benjamin E. and Debora T. (Jope) Jones. Mr. Jones was born in Wales, and when young came with two brothers to the United States, married in Pennsylvania, and when J. H. was an infant they removed to Tennessee and a few years later to Paducah, Ken., where they resided till 1861, when they removed to Louisiana, where they have continued to reside; both are consistent members of the Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Jones is also a member of the Masonic fraternity. Since the war Mr. Jones has devoted his attention to farming, but prior to that time he was an extensive iron manufacturer. He established iron works in Tennessee, built the rolling mills at Paducah, Ky., and during the war established the Cherokee Iron Works in Texas, which he operated till the close of the war. The subject of this sketch is the oldest of a family of five sons and three daughters. His educational advantages were limited to the public schools of the various places where his people resided, remaining at home till 1868, when he left the parental roof in Louisiana and came to Arkansas, and for some time was engaged as a clerk at Okolona in Clark County, at Camden, Arkadelphia and at Hope, till 1878, when he went to Dardanelle and engaged in the hardware business with a Mr. Foster, the firm being Foster & Jones till 1884, when Mr. Jones came to Morrilton where he now leads the trade in his business, and has a good house in the Clifton addition. In 1882 Mr. Jones married Miss Annie L. Jackson of Dardanelle, and they have two sons and two daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Jones are members of the Missionary Baptist Church, and Mr. Jones is a member of the K. of P., Hermion Lodge, No. 28, and of the A. F. and A. M., Lewisburg Lodge, No. 105; and is a Democrat in politics.
