He was the second of three children born to John W. and Margie E. (Johnson) Palmer. Two are now living, and both reside in this county. Parents were natives of Tennessee, where father followed merchandising, and while returning from a trip to New York, where he had been to purchase goods, he was taken sick on an Ohio River steamer, and died in 1851. He was a Mason and an active man in his day and time. Mrs. Palmer died in 1880. G. A. Palmer, the subject of this sketch, was educated at Vicksburg, Miss., and at the early age of thirteen years began for himself, and afterwards settled in this county. On January 14, 1869, he was married to Mary J. Weems, a native of Mississippi, and to this union have been born twelve children, named William H., Charley M., John W., Sarah A., Margie E., James A., Mattie A., Eliza E., Alfred L., Joseph E., and Mary J.; the others died in infancy, unnamed. Mr. Palmer is now nicely situated on a good farm of 160 acres, with 100 under cultivation, on which he pursues general farming, raising a variety of crops. Socially, he is a member of the Odd Fellows, Hope Lodge, No. 38; he is also quite active politically, and an earnest advocate of the principles of the Democratic party. He and wife are members of the Missionary Baptist Church, in which he holds the office of deacon.
