Goodspeed Publishers, 1891. page 97 Jesse P. Powell, a planter of Nichols Township, Conway County, was born in Choctaw County, Mississippi, July 27, 1838. His parents were William and Margaret (Faulkner) Powell; father being a native of South Carolina (born in 1810) and mother a native of Alabama. To this union were born nine children, five still living, four residing in this county, and one in Texas. Mr. Powell emigrated from Mississippi to Arkansas, in 1876 and settled in Conway County, where he has since resided. He is now in vigorous old age, hale and hearty and in his 81st year. Has been a member of the Missionary Baptist Church for years. Our subject was feared and educated in Mississippi, and at the age of 20 years began life for himself by farming, and had a very moderate start. He was married April 17, 1861, to Eliza J. Hood, who was a native of Tennessee, and to this union have been born six children, named John C., Virgil I., William H. and Jesse A. (died March 28, 1880). James N., Robert A. and Margaret E. Mr. Powell emigrated from Mississippi to Arkansas in 1879, and settled in Conway County, where he is now engaged in agricultural pursuits. He owns a good upland farm of 170 acres, with eighty under a high state of cultivation. Our subject was a Confederate soldier, serving as private in Company K, 22d Mississippi Regiment; was at Corinth and other battles. He is a member of Centre Ridge Lodge, A. F. and A. M., in which he has held several offices; also, a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
