Goodspeed Publishers, 1891. page 120 Geo. H. Taylor, the Postmaster of Cleveland, where he also carries on the business of druggist, was born in Pope County, December 1, 1854. His parents, George W. and Narcissus Cooper Taylor, were natives of Tennessee, where the father was born in 1818, and the mother in 1822. They were the parents of nine child en, of whom four are now living, three having homes in this State, and one in the Indian Territory. The father was a farmer and stock raiser, and came to Arkansas with the pioneers in 1844. He made a permanent settlement in Pope County, making that locality his home till his death, March 31, 1866. His wife died in 1876. This worthy couple were exemplary citizens of their day and time, and did all in their power, by setting a worthy example, to mold in truthful ways the footsteps of the people living in their time. They were both church members; he of the Cumberland Presbyterian and she of the Baptist Church. The subject of this sketch was educated in the private schools of Pope County, and at the early age of 17 years, took up the burdens of life for himself. In 18, 2 he married Mary E. Nichols, a native of Pope County, also. In 1883 he moved to the new town of Cleveland in this county, and at once engaged in the commercial business there. Though with but small capital, he has expanded and added to it till he has now ample means to conduct a good paying business. He was appointed Postmaster in 1889, and prior to that he served as County Judge from 1886 to 1888. He is an active member of the Masonic fraternity, Cleveland Lodge. No. 473. in which he has held the office of Senior Warden. He was Justice of Nichols' Township for four terms, and takes an active part in the politics of the county. To the marriage of Mr. Taylor and wife have been born four children, who are named, Mary P., James J., Lona M., George H. The family are members of the Missionary Baptist Church.
