Born in Davidson County, Tennessee, November 13, 1842, he is the son of John L. and Julia A. (Scott) Thompson, both born, reared and married in Tennessee. In 1852 the family moved to Arkansas, and took up their abode in Pope County, where he remained till 1863, when, on account of the troublesome times of the war, he came to Conway County, where he was killed in 1864. His wife had died in 1862. They were members of the Primitive Baptist Church, and were the parents of nine children, six of whom are living now. John Thompson accompanied his parents to Arkansas in 1852, and was then a boy of 10 years of age. He received his education and grew up in Pope County. He began the foundation of his own fortune when 26 years of age by embarking in the life of a farmer. In 1869 he was married to Mariah F. James, who was also a native of Tennessee. To this union have been born seven children, named George H., Thomas H., David A., Marion A., Henry J., Ruth A., and Daniel P. Mr. Thompson follows the occupation of farming, and owns 160 acres of good land, with 40 under cultivation. He and wife are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. His aid and influence have ever been given to the growth and welfare of this locality.
