AUG. 23, 1995 OBITURARIES FRIEDA ADAMS ************ Frieda E. Adams, 79, of Perryville died Mon., Aug. 21, 1995 She was born Apr. 17, 1916, to Floyd Hitchcock and Kata A. Miles in Grayling, Mich. She was a retired dietician for St. Rose Hospital in Hayward, Calif. She was a member of the Auxiliary VFW in Perryville and a member of the First United Pentecostal Church. Survivors include one son, Larry VanKleeck of Des Moines, Wash.; one daughter, JoAnn Santos of Perryville; one sister, Geneva Germain of Washington; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was born Aug. 26, 1913, in Bigelow, a daughter of Charles Henry Gaddy and Lily Edmonson Gaddy. Mrs. Brown was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bigelow and was a former Sunday School teacher. Survivors include her husband, E. L. Brown; four sons, Harold Brown of Harleton, TX, Jimmy Brown of Crosby, TX., David Brown of Lake Tahoe, Calif., and Mike Brown of Little Rock; four daughters, Gold Grubber of Las Vegas, Ruth Spatz of Harleton, TX., Jerry Fokken of Bigelow, and Kathy Oney of Dubberly, La.; two sisters, Gladys Anthony of Bountiful, Utah, and Kathrine Baker of Harleton, Tx; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were 2 p.m. Sat. at the First Baptist Church in Bigelow by the Rev. Sam Parker, the Rev. Fred Oakes, and Dr. Bill Brown. Honorary pallbearers were Skip Johnson, Mose McKinney, and Walter Frye. ROBERT BURRIS SR. **************** Robert H. "Boots" Burris Sr., 69, of Morrilton, died Sun., Aug. 20, 1995. He was born Jan. 8, 1926, in Conway, a son of Ottis G. Burris and Gertrude Hill Burris. Mr. Burris owned and operated Burris Grocery for 30 yrs. and was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include three sons, Keith Burris and Floyd Burris, both of Morrilton, and Lloyd Burris of Russellville; two daughters, Karen Dunn of Russellville, and Mary Jane Riddling of Little Rock; one brother, Troy Burris of Calif.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert H. Burris Jr., and a brother, Jay Burris. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. today (Wed.) at the Harris Chapel by the Rev. Bobby Spencer. Burial will be at St. Joe’s Cemetery by Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton. Pallbearers will be Melton Haley, Gary Huett, Larry Miller, Ralph Huett, Tim Treadway, and Terry Green. ARLIE CAMPBELL ************** Arlie Campbell, 80, of Cleveland, died Sat., Aug. 19, 1995. He was born Sept. 28, 1914, near Scotland, a son of Grover Cleveland Campbell and Parvellia Roberson Campbell. Mr Campbell was retired from Crompton Mills and was a member of the Cleveland Baptist Church. He was a member of the Cleveland Masonic Lodge No. 473. Survivors include one daughter, Betty Jo Ann Rieske of Cleveland; one brother, Marshall Campbell of Cleveland; two grandhcildren, and six great-granchildren. Funeral services were 2:30 p.m. Mon. at the Cleveland Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Sheets. Masonic graveside services were at Reid Cemetery. Arrangements were by Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton. He was born Dec. 5, 1925, in Morrilton, a son of M. L. Hair and Annie Epperson Hair. Mr. Hair was a security guard for Murray Guard Inc., a Navy WW II veteran and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include one sister, Frances A. Cunningham of Tulsa, Okla. Funeral services were 10 a.m. Mon. at the Harris Chapel by Dr. Bill Brown. Burial was at Halbrook Cemetery by Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton. HELEN JONES *********** Helen Mahan Hensley Jones, 86, of Morrilton died Aug. 21, 1995. She was born Nov. 4, 1908, a daughter of Johnnie and Hattie Allen Mahan in Damascus. She was a member of the Baptist church in Plumerville. Survivors include five sons, Roland Hensley and Bob Hensley, both of Scramento, Calif., Fred Hensley of Little Rock, Richard Hensley of Bradford, and Ronnie Hensley of West Memphis; five daughters, Weda Lucas and Catherine Palmer of Springfield, Mable Baker of Little Rock, Erma Rawlings of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Linda Barney of Winston, Ore.; five sisters, 34 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren. EDGAR KIRK ********** Edgar Kirk, 83, of Jonesboro, brother of Thurston Kirk of Morrilton, died Wed., Aug. 9, 1995. Mr. Kirk was a WW II Veteran, a retired history instructor at Atk. State Univ., and a member of First Methodist Church of Jonesboro. Other than his brother, survivors include his wife, Vera Baxter Kirk; another brother, Elmer Kirk of Batesville; and a sister, Ina Kirk Sowell of Olive Branch, Miss. Funeral services were at Emerson Funeral Home Chapel at 10 a.m. Aug. 11. Burial was in Pleasant Valley cemetery near Cushman at 2 p.m. ROBERT KIRK *********** Robert L. Kirk, 67, of Marble Falls, Texas, died Thurs., Aug. 10, 1995. He was a brother of Thurston Kirk of Morrilton. He was retired from Lone Star Steel Co. in Lone Star, TX., and had been manager of Double Eagle Deer Farm and Game Ranch in Marble Falls the past three years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Marble Falls. Other than his borther, survivors include his wife, Mary Margaret Kirk; a son, John Kirk of Austin, Tx.; three daughters, Jane Parker of Dallas, Judy Roundtree of Burnett, TX., and Kathy Howard of Katy, Tx.; another brother, Elmer Kirk of Batesville; one sister, Ina Kirk Sowell of Olive Branch, Miss.; and eight grandchildren. Funeral were in Marble Falls Aug. 13, at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home. Burial was at Lakeland Hills Memorial Cemetery near Marble Falls. Mr. and Mrs. Thurston Kirk, Steve Kirk of Morrilton, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kirk of Batesville, and Dianna Thayer of Columbia, Md. attended funeral services for their brother and uncle, Edgar Kirk, in Jonesboro Aug. 11. Burial services were held at Pleasant Valley Cemetery near Cushman. After this services they drove to Marble Falls, Texas, to attend funeral services for another brother and uncle, Robert Kirk, who died Aug. 10, 1995. GAYLORD LANCE ************* Gaylord J. M. Lance, 59, of Morrilton, died Tues., Aug. 22. He was born May 29, 1936, in Kennett, Mo., a son of the late Hudson Lester Lance. Mr. Lance was an electrician for Ark. Kraft, a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Morrilton, and an Army Korean War Veteran. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ann Walls Lance; one son, Timothy G. Lance of Conway; two daughters, Kymberli S. Lance Bennett of Texarkana, Ark., and Elizabeth S. Lance of Conway; mother, Bernice Sparks Lance of Kennett, Mo.; three brothers, Gerald and Terry Lance, both of Kennett, Mo., and Phillip Lance of Piggot; two sisters, Joan Lance Robbins of Tampa, Fla., and Linda Lance Higgins of Kennett, Mo.; and two grandsons. Burial will be at noon at the National Cemetery in Little Rock by Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton. DELIA LOYD ********** Mrs. Delia Dotson Loyd, 85, of Russellville, mother of J.B. Loyd of Morrilton, died Sun., Aug. 13, 1995. She was the daughter of the late Jim and Minnie Page Dotson and a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. Other survivors include another son, Larry Loyd of Lake Jackson, Texas; two daughters, Helen Brown and Carlene Loyd of Russellville; a brother, David Dotson of Dover; a sister, Stella Madison of Shawnee, Okla.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services were 2 p.m. last Wed. at North Hope Assembly of God by the Rev. Bob Alexander. Burial was at North New Hope Cemetery by Shinn Funeral Service of Russellville. VELMA MEREDITH ************** Velma Magie Meredith, 84, of Hot Springs, died Thurs., Aug. 17, 1995. She was born Aug. 15, 1911, a daughter of Holly and Josie Howard Magie of Nimrod. She was a member of Second Baptist Church. She and her late husband, David, had been owners of Meredith Motor Co. since the late 1930s. Survivors include a son, Wendell Meredith of Hot Springs; one brother, Paul Magie of Perryville; three sisters, Carmon Anderson of Perryville, Ida Umphers of Little Rock and Bonita Magie of Hot Springs; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were 2 p.m. Mon. at Gross Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Craver officiating. Burial was in Crestview Mausoleum. Pallbearers were Jerry Magie, John Magie, Ronnie Magie, Vell Meredith, Bud Tucker, and Steve Gains. ELIZABETH NEWCOMER ****************** Elizabeth Duncan Newcomer, wife of the Rev. Dr. Andrew Newcomer, pastor of First Presbyterian Church from 1941-1945, died July 10, 1995, in Walnut Creek, Calif. She was born in Nashville, Ill., in 1911 to the Rev. William and Rebecca Ranson Duncan. She was a graduate of Marville college, Maryville, tenn., (Class of ‘33), and a recipient of the college’s Alumni Citation, in 1976. Mrs. Newcomer was the first Director of Volunteer Recruitment for the American Bible Society serving from 1964 to 1972. She was also an instructor in homiletics and speech at Bloomfield College and Seminary, a Presbyterian institution in Bloomfield, N. J. A noted leader and public speaker, she was active throughout her life in Presbyterian Women, receiving an honorary life membership in 1993. She was a member of AAUW, PEO, and Church Women United. While in Morrilton, she was a member of the Pathfinders Club. Other than her husband, survivors include a daughter, Dr. Beclee N. Wilson of Piedmont, Calif.; a son, the Rev. Duncan D. Newcomer of Chester, Conn.; and two granchildren. Internment was in Louisville, Ky., July 17. A memorial service was held at Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church, Lafayette, Calif., on Aug. 1. NORMENDIA ODOM ************** Mrs. Normendia Odom, 77, of Kansas City, Mo., died Sun., Aug. 13, 1995. She was born April 23, 1918, in Springfield, a daughter of Willie B. and Acellious Johnson. She was a member of Cleveland Ave. Baptist Church and a retired beautician. Survivors include two sons, Roy E. Odom of Plumerville and Joe L. Odom of Kansas city, Mo.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were 2 p.m. Sat. at the Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church by the Rev. Matthew Smith. KATIE PRINCE ************ Mrs. Katie Alverson Prince, 69, of Adona, died Fri., Aug. 18, 1995. She was the widow of William T. Prince. She was born Jan. 17, 1926, in Thomas, Okla., a daughter of Harley Ransom Brookshire and Ester Savely Brookshire Hinton. She was a retired sales clerk and was a member of the Northwest Assembly of God in North Little Rock. Survivors include three sons, Joel Melvin Alverson of Morrilton, Jearl Ray Alverson of Perry, and Jerry Wayne Alverson of Oppelo; two daughters, Janet Marie Alverson Dicus of Adona and Jeanne Carolina Alverosn Huff of Petit Jean Mountain; five brothers, James Brookshire of Pacific, Mo., Harley Brookshire of Portland, Ore., J. D. Hinton of Hardy, Curtis Hinton of Goldsboro, N. She was born Mar. 2, 1942, in Plumerville, a daughter of L.E. and Ruby Lee McDaniel Robinson of Plumerville. She was a graduate of Conway County raining School and a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Other than her parents, survivors include one son, Gerald Robinson of Fort Eustis, Va.; three daughters, Shelby Robinson of Sacramento, Calif., Gale Stubbs of Killeen, TX., and Stephanie Robinson of Morrilton; two brothers, James Robinson and William Robinson, both of Plumerville; one sister, Margaret Stewart of Texarkana, Ark.; and seven grandchildren. She was a 1995 graduate of Violonia High School where she was a member of the yearbook staff. She was nominated for Who’s-Who Among American High school Students for two years. Other than her parents, survivors include one sister, Jennifer L. VanDalsen of Conway; paternal grandparents, Harrison C. and Phyllis A. VanDalsen of Thornburg; maternal grandparents, Narvin and Blanch Maxwell of Morrilton; great-grandmother, Neveda Goforth of Thornburg. COREAN WILSON ************* Mrs. Corean H. Wilson, 94, of St. Paul, Minn., died Sat., Aug. 19, 1995. She was a member of St. Matthew No. 3 Batptist Church at Blackwell.
