James W. Mead. a leading planter of the county and also
mail contractor, is a native of Georgia, born in Madison County, January
22, 1850. His parents were James D. and Thessa (Moon) Mead [see sketch],
both natives of Georgia. He came with his father to this State and county
when a boy seven years of age, and was reared on his father's farm,
receiving his education at the county schools. He chose as his life
companion, Jane Beaty, a native of Arkansas, reared in this county, and
December 24, 1868, they were united in marriage. He engaged in farming
for several years after this event, and in 1880 opened a saloon at Lake
City, and was engaged in the saloon business for six years. In 1883 he
was appointed deputy sheriff, and served in that capacity until November,
1888. Since that time he has been farming. Mr. and Mrs. Mead have two
children, Nora and Otto, and lost three in early childhood. Mr. Mead has
been quite prominent in local affairs, is a Republican in politics, and
has been postmaster, serving in that capacity for several years. He is a
Knight of Honor and also a Mason.
