Robert & Perlina Pettit Rogers were living in Lees Township, Crawford Co. AR in the 1860's. The oral tradition in the descendants is that Robert was killed and thrown into the hog pen and eaten up. There are several versions of this story in each family of descendants, but I believe the most believeable is the one told by William Jones who descends from David W. Jones & Mary Ann (Polly) Pettit. William states that the story told to him was that Robert & Perlina were at home one night and some renegades came to the house to kill him. He ran out the back door and got away from them. He was afraid to come home that night so spent the night waking up the cattle in the woods and trying to sleep where they had made it warm. When the ground would get cold, he would get another cow up and so he spent the night. There was snow all over the ground. The second time, he was not so lucky and they killed him. They say Perlina followed the trail the next morning picking up Robert's teeth along the way. By the time she found him wild hogs had nearly eaten him up. Perlina loaded up her belongings and went back to MO where she still had family. Robert & Perlina had eight children with one on the way. The ninth was born in Benton Co., AR January 1, 1862. Robert is buried in Bryant Cemetery. His grave is covered with huge sandstones. His daughter and son-in-law are buried next to him. Perlina lived out her life in Texas with her daughter Sarah Whinery Smith. She is buried in the old Walnut Springs Cemetery in Walnut Springs, Bosque Co., TX. ======================================================================
