He early became a citizen of Little Rock, Ark., and in 1835 located two miles below where Van Buren is now situated. In 1836 he and John Drennan purchased 265 acres of land, and laid out the town of Van Buren. Mr. Thompson was a land speculator and trader, and also engaged in the general mercantile business. March 17, 1818, he married Miss Loretta Dedrick, at Jonesboro, Tenn., who was born in 1801 and died in 1837. She was the mother of eight children, of whom three are living: Frances M. (widow of James A. Scott), Calvin M. and Julia (widow of William P. Denkla). Calvin M. Thompson was born in Nashville, Tenn., in 1833, came to Crawford County with his parents, and after their deaths was reared by John Drennan. January 15, 1857, he [p.1203] married Miss Rebecca Wilcox, daughter of Hon. Henry and Sarah P. Wilcox. This union has been blessed with one child Sarah F. (wife of Lewis Bryan). Mr. Thompson merchandised until the war, and has since been engaged in agricultural pursuits. In politics he is a Democrat, and his wife is a member of the Episcopal Church and a lady of fine character.
