An intensive manhunt is under way in the county for two highwaymen who fatally shot Nelson Burnett, deaf farmer living near Earle, late Saturday in a holdup. Mr. Burnett, 32 years old, was found lying in the road 45 minutes after he was shot, by James Roe, a neighbor, who took him to Earle. From there, the wounded man was taken to Baptist Hospital in Memphis, in an ambulance. He died at 9:30 a.m. on Monday. Mr. Burnett told Mr. Roe that two young man dressed in overalls stopped him on the highway as he was walking home from Earle about 11:45 p.m. Saturday night. He asked them what they wanted, he said and one of them opened fire, shooting him through the abdomen. He said he could not hear what the youths said. The pair rifled his clothing of $4 dollars in cash and fled. He gave a good description of the men and officers were hopeful of catching the murderers. City Marshal P. D. Peacher of Earle is conducting the hunt. Funeral services for Mr. Burnett were held at Earle on Tuesday."
