Byrd was received as a member of Florence society by recommendation and Martha A. Mason, F.F. Myhand, A.D. Touchstone, J.A. Ledbetter and Jacob Tanner by experience. Brother Thomas Howel was elected and ordained an Elder of Florence Society. A committee consisting of Elders Mason & McGowan were appointed to investigate a matter of disorderly conduct supposed to have been committed by Elvin, a colored sister and to report at the next meeting. T.P. Stone, Mod. J.J. Richardson, Clk February the 9th 1868 The Session met at Florence composed of Elders McGowan, Tagart, Mason & Howel. The committee on the case of Elvin reported that she acknowledged the crime and promised to be more orderly in future. Charges were then brought before the session against Brother J.J. Eager for very improper conduct and he having absconded is therefore by the session excluded (suspended) from the church. A committee consisting of Brethren J.P. Taggart & J.G. Gibson were then appointed to wait upon Brother J.T. Eager and report to the session next meeting. Brother W.G. Lambright applied for letters for himself and wife Susan N. Clk July the 11th 1868 (sic) The Florence Session met at Florence and being known to the session that Brethren M.E. Paschall and A.P. Hayes had been guilty of immoral conduct and they having removed out of their jurisdiction order their names to be discontinued as members of Florence congregation. It having also been reported to the session that Brother E.A. Howell had been guilty of immoral conduct Elder J.P. Richardson, Clk August the 8th 1869 The Florence Session met at Florence after public service when Elder J.P. Tagart who had been appointed to wait up on Brother E.A. Howell asked for further time and was given until the next regular meeting to report. Elders Tagart and Stanley were appointed as a committee to talk with Brethren B.T. Richardson, Clk September 12 1869 The Session met at Florence opened by prayer members present Rev. T.P. Stone (Min) Elders Tagart, Mason, Paschall, Howell & Stanley. And received C.W. McLemore, S.D. Thompson, H.C. Thompson, Ann E. Smith, Cornelia Hawk, Susan E. Hawk, Martha Arrington and Benjamin Arrington as members of Florence congregation by experience. The committee appointed to confer with Brother E.A. Howell reported and the session at the same time received a written request from Brother E.A. Howell that his name be withdrawn from the congregation and his request was by the session granted. The committee appointed to confer with Brethren B.T. Stone & Jacob Tanner reported that they made all necessary acknowledgements and promised to be more moral in future. They were by the Session forgiven. It being known to the session that Sister Harriet Isaack had been dancing Elders Howel & Tagart voluntarily talked to her. She confessed she had done wrong and expressed sorrow for the same and the session forgave her, but appointed Elder D.B. Mason to confer with her in regard to her future welfare. Elder Stanley was appointed to represent Florence congregation in the next meeting of the Bartholomew Presbytery to be holden in Monticello Drew County Ark commencing on Friday the 1st day of October A.D. 1869. Jacob Bradshaw reported that he made satisfactory acknowledgements and wished the session to bear with him and he would try to be more moral. Which request was by the session granted. T.P. Shultz, Rhoda Shultz, and Josephine Shultz as members of Florence congregation by experience. The committee appointed to confer with G.D. Lytle and Wm. Isaac requested further time and were allowed until the next regular meeting to report. Cornelia and Susan E. Hawk on the 12th of Sept 1869 joined the church and have of their own account neglected to be baptized and having since been dancing, the session thinks proper to discontinue their names as members of Florence Congregation. The committee appointed to confer with Sister G.A. Hawk reported that Sister Hawk confessed she was sorry she had danced and would do so no more she was by the session forgiven. Clerk December the 8th 1872 The Session met after public worship at Florence composed of the following members (viz) Rev. T.P. Stone, Moderator, Elders Mason, Tagart, Stanley, Howell & Touchstone and received Samuel C. Defir as a member of Florence congregation by letter from Six Mile Church Alabama. The committee upon case of Brethren Isaac and Lytle report that they find Brother Lytle not to be guilty of any immoral conduct. He is therefore by the session exonerated. Richardson, Clk January the 12th 1873 The session met at Florence after public worship composed of Rev. T.P. Stone, Moderator, and Elders Mason, Tagart and Touchstone. Wm. Isaac requested his name to be withdrawn from Florence Congregation which was granted. It being made known to this session that J.E. Richardson, C.E. Barbour, and P.A. Hawk had been dancing, Elders Touchstone and C.J. Bean were appointed to bear a citation for each of them to appear on Saturday before the 2nd Sabbath in February to answer said charge (unless they made satisfactory acknowledgements). George D. Lytle requested his name to be withdrawn from Florence Congregation which was granted. The session then adjourned to meet February 8th at 12 o'clock. T.P. Stone, Mod. J.J. Lytle has been convicted of grand larceny and is now confined in the state penitentiary that his name be dropped from the roll as unworthy to be a member of Florence Congregation. And whereas we consider our beloved pastor worthy of his meat and that we think it the duty of the church to support him in his declining years after he has spent his life in the service of the church without any pay except the reward he will receive beyond the Jordan of death. Resolved that we think it is the duty of every member of Florence Congregation to pay for the support of the Gospel as the Lord has prospered him in this worlds goods. And that we think it is the duty of Florence Congregation to appoint a finance committee whose duty it shall be to assess each member the amount he or she should pay for each year and said committee not to be chosen from the Eldership and if any member should think him or herself assessed too high may appeal to the church session and have the assessment corrected. There being slanderous reports in circulation against L.C. Goff, Rev. T.P. Stone and Elder D.B. Mason were appointed a committee to investigate the matter and make report as soon as convenient. A.D. The committee appointed to draft resolutions in regard to the death of Elder D. Touchstone offered the following resolution which was read and approved and the committee discharged. Whereas God in his wise providence after a short yet painful illness through the agency of congestion of the kidneys take Brother Dempsy Touchstone who was on the 12th of March A.D. 1872 elected and ordained a Ruling Elder of Florence Church from the labor of the Church was sent to his final reward on the 1st day of October A.D. 1876 Aged Fifty One Years. Resolved therefore 1st That the officers and members of Florence Congregation bow with profound submission to the inscrutable providence. 2nd That in the death of Brother Touchstone the Church has lost a quiet, unassuming every day Christian member. 3rd That the Church session has lost a co-laborer who was ever cautious conscientious and safe in his official duties. Also that we heed with profound awe the lesson here taught. The day in which to work is short. 4th That his companion lost a kind husband, his children an affectionate father and the country a worthy citizen. 5th That the bereaved family have our profound sympathy in this their saddest affliction. Richardson, Clk March the 11th 1877 Florence Congregation elected John Thomas and N.C. Mason, Elders of Florence Congregation and before preaching they were ordained. After preaching the session met composed of B.A. Ingram, Mod., T.P. Stone, Minister, Elders D.B. Mason, J.P. Stanley, T.P. Howell, J. Thomas and N.C. Mason. Sister Maryland M. Irwin requested that her membership be transfered from Spring Hill Congregation to Florence which was granted through the recommendation of Rev. T.P. Stone. The committee appointed to confer with Sister Elizabeth Crane reported that she wished to withdraw her name from the church which was by the session granted. The committee appointed to draft resolutions in regard to the death of Elder J.P. Tagart offered the following resolutions which were received and the committee discharged. Tagart Aged Fifty Seven years a ruling Elder in the Florence Congregation. At a meeting of the Session of Florence Congregation of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church a committee was appointed to draft preamble and resolutions in regard to the Death of Brother Tagart who made the following report. Whereas death has again visited our church session and taken from our midst Bro. Tagart one of our most efficient and zealous members who stated but a few hours before his death that there was no clouds in the future that all was bright before him. Whereas our number lessened by death increases the work and responsibilities of those of us remaining, Therefore resolved that we the church session feel deeply and keenly the loss sustained by the death of Brother Tagart. 2nd That we be urged by his death to greater increased energy and zeal in our work for the Master, knowing not how soon we too may be called to go. 3rd That as a token of our respect for the memory of our departed Brother one leaf of our minutes be set apart for the record of these resolutions. 4th That we extend to Brother Tagart's bereaved wife and family assurance of our Christian sympathy in their hour of affliction. Shults request their names to be discontinued as members of Florence Congregation which was by the Session granted. The case of C.J. and J.E. Richardson was deferred until next meeting and Rev. T.P. Stone was added to the committee to again confer with them. The committee appointed in Aug last to confer with J.O. Cooper beg further time to report which is granted. The names of W.R.D. Barnett, J.M. Barnett, Joseph Barnett, Sarah E. Barnett, J.A. Frost, Susan Frost, H.L. Barbour & C.E. Barbour are by their request transfered to Tyro Congregation Lincoln County. T.P. Stone resigned his pastoral charge and at the meeting of the Bartholomew Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church I secured the services of Brother J.S. Weaver for the next presbyterial year for which I promise to pay him the sum of seventy five dollars or that Florence Congregation would pay seventy five dollars or more and I hope the members of this church will meet this obligation punctual as Bro Weaver is in need of all the help he can get to enable him to prepare to more effectually preach the Gospel. I was in attendance all the time at the presbytery which was the largest and most harmonious as ever met in the bounds of the Bartholomew Presbytery. All of which is respectfully submitted.
