Joseph Roden was born in Tishomingo County, Miss., on June 24, 1839. He is the son of Josiah and Nancy J. Hawkins Roden. Josiah was born in the Greenville District, So. Carolina, in 1798, and Nancy was born in Overton County, Tenn., in 1808. Josiah and Nancy were married in Tenn. about 1833, and later moved to Miss. Josiah's father was Nathaniel Roden of So. Carolina, During the Civil war, Joseph enlisted in co. B, 26th Mississippi Infantry. However, a few days later, he contracted measles, and was forced to withdraw. In 1862, he moved with his parents to Arkansas and there joined Company 1, Sixth Arkansas Infantry, operating in Arkansas and Texas. He served with this unit until the end of the war. His duties were "special work", and received high marks for his work during the conflict. He surrendered to General Canby in the state of Louisiana in 1865. Later that same year, on May 31, at Shreveport, he married Miss Lizzie V. Hamlett, a daughter of John Hamlett of Tenn., and Nancy Holland Burns Lucas of Mississippi. At this time, the Hamletts lived in Marshall, Texas. This marriage produced 8 children: Carrie Ioa Lou Born 1-6-1866 Died young Ina De Ross Born 12-20-1867 Married Q.B. Bailey Sue Edna Born 2-20-1871 Married a Mr. Carter and then a Mr Anderson. James Born 5-13-1873 Died young William Frank (girl) Born 9-27-1875 married a Mr. Lackey Adelia Elizabeth Born 10-2-1877 Married Henry Carter Effie Dean Born 8-2-1877 Married Walter Chivers Mary Lewis Born 11-19-1882, Married Jess Berry Shortly after their marriage, Joseph and Lizzie moved to Little Rock, Ark, where he was engaged under contract to do government teaming. He next entered into the shoe and boot business, but did not find it to his liking, and moved to Texas. Lizzie was born in Marshall, Texas. After a short stay in Texas, he moved again, this time to Pulaski County, where he engaged in farming until 1871. He next moved to Faulkner County, where he remained until his death on March 31,1902. He operated a corn and flour mill, and cotton gin, at a location that was commonly known as "Rodens Mill", and that name still stands in the memory of some older Faulkner County citizens. A street that intersects Highway 36 nearby is known as Rodens Mill road. He was a staunch Democrat, was elected Justice of the Peace, and later elected to the legislature.
