A previous church (there may have been another building before this one) stood approximately 75 yards in front of the present building on the west shore of Gar Creek. This building was of log construction with split log seats. There was no ceiling in the building and stories were repeated for generations concerning how cold the building became in winter. There was a spring in the creek bed and a copperas spring located across the creek about 150 yards up the hillside which supplied water. The copperas spring was walled in with rocks and was used for a water supply by both the church and school. The Old Wire Road (now state highway 352) was built during the 1830's as a military road between Little Rock and the new post at Fort Smith for troop movement and transfer of Indians from the eastern United States to Indian Territory. It derives its name from the telegraph wires which once ran alongside the road. It was also sometimes referred to as The Military Road. The original road from the Gar Creek community to Ozark left the Old Wire Road and roughly followed Gar Creek, since that was the most level route. Unfortunately, this road crossed the creek several times, so it was impassable when the creek was high. The road gradually ceased to be used during the 1920's and early 1930's as automobile use became more common and the other Ozark road was not much longer and was better maintained. The church is located approximately one quarter mile south of the old Wire Road on the old road to Ozark. The portion of the road from the church to the Old Wire Road was rerouted away from Gar Creek during the 1940's on land donated by Ada Edgin Kearns because the old road was narrow and barely passable in wet weather. According to community tradition, the site of the present church served for years as a camp ground where religious services were held from the earliest days. Religious revivals were held each August after the crops were laid by. People came from miles around and spent several days to attend services. The original building served as both a school and a church. Among the teachers at this school was a Mrs. Newberry, whose daughter, Plurie Newberry, married Benjamin Edgin. The only persons attending school in this building who can be positively identified were Samuel Andrew Edgin, the father of Raymond Edgin and Ada Edgin Kearns; Tempest Ann Tomberlin, the mother of Ozema Dunford Campbell; Tom Scott (Mrs. Tom Plemmons) and Bill Conatser. However, there were, no doubt, many others. The only preacher of the older church who has been positively identified is the Rev. B. H. Greathouse who came to the church in the fall of 1872. According to an article written by John A. Floyd in 1938 and published in the Franklin County Historical Association Observer, Volume 6, Number 1, in July, 1985. The Rev. Greathouse was 24 years old when he came to the church. He served the churches at Lone Elm, Bonds Springs, Gar Creek, Grenades Chapel and Hickersons Chapel. He and his wife used a buggy to travel between the various churches and lived with a church member's family at each location. While at Gar Creek, he lived with Mr. Floyd's father, Alva W. Floyd. The Rev. Greathouse later became quite prominent in the Methodist Church. To date, no records of the church prior to 1884 have been located. The period immediately following the Civil War was extremely difficult in the Franklin County area. The economy was in shambles and Jayhawkers and Bushwhackers roamed the country at will. Although the community generally supported the Confederacy, the support in many parts of the county was luke warm. Some persons served in the Union army, while others avoided serving by hiding in the mountains. Several men from the community stayed at a small camp in White Oak Gulch when union troops were active in the area. A few hardy individuals actually served in both the Union and Confederate armies, hopefully at different times. Many people left Franklin County during the war for the safety of their families and themselves. Several families moved to the part of Texas along the Red River and several moved into northwest Texas. After the war, some returned, but many did not. By almost 20 years following the Civil War, the local economy improved to the point that the community felt it could afford a new school and a proper church. During the 1880's, New Hope School was constructed approximately a mile north of the old combination school and church. Gar Creek Methodist was one of four churches constructed along the Old Wire Road. The others were Pleasant Grove, Grenades Chapel and Bethlehem. On August 5, 1882, Isaac J. Cook and his wife Mary S. Cook donated land for the new church. It is located in the south west quarter of section 17, township 10, range 26 west adjoining Gar Creek Cemetery and just north of the old building. The deed was made to W. R. Nave, W. G. Davis, and M. L. Hallum, trustees of the Methodist Church South and to their successors in office. The deed was recorded by James O. Alston on the August 8, 1882. The Gar Creek Cemetery predates the present church building by several years, the oldest marked graves dating to the 1850's. However, many of the unmarked graves are probably much older.. The church was built during the spring of 1884, and the dedication was held in June of that year. The surviving records include members from 1884, and the list of pastors starts from that year. However, neither of the three trustees are on the oldest of the membership rolls which indicates that the records may not be complete. Two M. L. Hallums are listed, for example. The first joined in February, 1888 and the later in August, 1888. It seems unlikely that either is the one who was a trustee unless he left and later rejoined. The records have been copied over several times. In each case the inactive or transferred members are left off and women who had married were listed by their new name. It is probable that the existing records are a copy of the original. Neither Isaac J. Cook or Mary S. Cook are listed as members on the surviving records. Of the three original trustees, W. R. Nave is buried along with two members of his family in graves marked only by native stones just outside the fence on the north side of the cemetery on land now owned by Harley Edgin. Two of M. L. Hallum's children have markers in the cemetery. No further records of W. G. Davis are available. The records which survive are mostly in the handwriting of the late Ed Shuller and the late E. Z. Dickerson. Mr. Shuller kept the records from the early 1900's until the 1930's when Mr. Dickerson assumed responsibility. The original records are in the possession of Harold Dickerson who resides in the Gar Creek Community. The church apparently prospered under some pastors and languished under others. The following is a summary of the number of members added each calendar year, indicating the source of membership: YEAR BAPTISM TRANSFER UNCERTAIN TOTAL 1884 2 3 0 5 1885 10 18 0 28 1886 9 24 0 33 1897 14 16 19 49 1898 12 7 6 25 1889 10 6 5 21 1890 4 21 0 25 1891 5 3 2 10 1892 5 3 0 8 1893 3 1 6 10 1894 1 7 6 14 1895 1 4 0 5 1896-1898 8 1 1 10 1899 2 1 0 3 1900 0 1 0 1 1901 0 0 0 0 1902 0 0 0 0 1903 3 5 0 8 1904 0 1 0 1 1905 2 1 0 3 1906 0 0 0 0 1907 0 0 0 0 1908 0 0 0 0 1909 0 0 0 0 YEAR BAPTISM TRANSFER UNCERTAIN TOTAL 1910 0 0 0 0 1911 5 32 0 37 1912 4 0 0 4 1913 1 0 0 1 1914 0 1 0 1 1915 0 1 0 1 1916 0 6 0 6 1917 0 0 0 0 1918 0 10 0 10 1919 0 0 0 0 1920 0 0 0 0 1921 2 36 0 38 1922 0 0 0 0 1923 0 0 0 0 1924 0 2 0 2 1925 0 1 0 1 1926 0 2 0 2 1927 0 0 0 0 1928 0 0 0 0 1929 10 0 0 10 1930 0 0 0 0 1931 2 1 0 3 1932 2 1 0 3 1933 0 3 0 3 1934 0 0 0 0 1935 2 4 0 6 1936 1 1 0 2 1937 2 2 0 4 1938 0 18 0 18 1939 1 1 0 2 1940 0 0 0 0 1941 0 8 0 8 1942 0 0 0 0 1943 0 3 0 3 1944 0 0 0 0 1945 0 0 0 0 1946 0 1 0 1 1947 0 0 0 0 1948 0 3 0 3 1949 0 0 0 0 YEAR BAPTISM TRANSFER UNCERTAIN TOTAL 1950 0 0 0 0 1951 1 9 0 10 1952 0 1 0 1 1953 0 0 0 0 1954 0 0 0 0 1955 0 0 0 0 1956 2 8 0 10 1957 2 0 0 2 1958 2 1 0 3 1959 2 1 0 3 1960 1 0 0 1 1961 0 0 0 0 1962 0 0 0 0 1963 0 0 0 0 1964 0 0 0 0 1965 2 0 0 2 1966 0 0 0 0 1967 0 0 0 0 1968 0 3 0 3 Total 12 23 0 35 Per Cent of Total 29.2 61.1 9.7 100 Footnotes to above table: 1 Includes persons indicated as having been received by baptism, vows, church vows, profession or profession of faith. 2 Transfer includes those persons indicated as having been received by transfer, certificate or by letter. 3 The records do not indicate how these persons were received. 4 Dates were not entered during some or all of these years, so the dates cannot be separated. The year of joining can be determined from the position of the person in the records for all years except 1896, 1897 and 1898. It is apparent from the above records that the church prospered in its early days. Later revivals in 1911, 1921 and 1938 added large groups of members, some of whom were members until the church closed. These revivals were usually held in late summer after crops were laid by. Frequently, an outside preacher was brought in to conduct these revivals, and some were obviously quite effective. The building was constructed in the traditional style for country churches of the period. It is in a rectangular shape with double doors at the front (to allow coffins to pass for funerals) and a single door at the back. Interestingly, the church is not aligned with the cardinal compass points but faces the Southwest. There is a small stage for the choir and minister at the back. The building must have been one of the last in Franklin County to have been constructed with square nails. It was equipped with pews made from 1" X 4" planks with solid supports at the ends and middle. These pews were replaced during the late 1940's by pews made by a wood shop in Ozark. The original lighting was by kerosene lanterns. The iron keepers for ropes which held the lanterns in place are still attached to the walls. Electricity was added in 1943 to provide lighting and a ceiling fan was installed. Two small class rooms were added to the back of the church during the late 1940's. These class rooms were torn down in the 1990's when the building was remodeled. A large wood burning stove in the center of the building served for many years. The wood burning stove was replaced during the 1950's with a butane heater. A place was prepared in Gar Creek about 150 yards above the church for baptizing new converts. Stone steps were prepared from the bank into the water to allow the pastor and the converts to wade into the creek. This facility was seldom used in later years as the Methodists did not share some other Protestant denominations' belief in the necessity of immersion to achieve a proper baptism. On September 19, 1895, the church acquired 40 acres of land from B. D. McWhorter for $140 deeded to trustees W. W. Read, W. C. Conatser and D. C. Logan for use as a church parsonage. On January 26, 1896 30, acres of this was sold to Frank Scott for $80. On February 15, 1908, trustees J. E. Hargrove and J. M. Sutherland as trustees deeded the remaining 10 acres to William N. Glover for $250. Apparently, the idea of the church owning its own parsonage was not a success. However, the property which is now owned by Kemper Edgin is still known locally as the "Old Parsonage Place." During the 1950's, the church at Pleasant Grove four miles west of the Gar Creek Church ceased holding services and the church building was moved to the Gar Creek site to serve as a community building. Provisions for cooking and water were added to this building, and it was used for community dinners and meetings. The money to move and maintain this building was supplied by the church and community members. Cemetery decoration on the second Sunday in May started by 1900, or even earlier. The church pews were taken out onto the lawn after church and covered with table cloths or bed sheets and dinner on the ground was served. People who had lived in the community for years past came, so the decoration also served as a community reunion. The ceremonies included a sermon, singing and recitations by the community children. Attendance at the early decorations was heavy. The dinner on the ground was discontinued about the middle 1950's. However, the decoration still is held. In recent years, a reunion of former students of New Hope School has been held on the Saturday before the second Sunday. The church struggled for many years with dwindling attendance, and it finally became impractical to keep it open. The minutes of the last Church Conference are as follows: "A Church Conference was held at Gar Creek United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on March 20, 1988. Those in attendance were District Superintendent William Cheyne, Pastor DuBois Pettit, members E. S. and Hazel Milton, Oscar and Quita Debes, Joe Parker, Ozema Campbell, Bonnie Dickerson and Ada Kearns. "Rev. Cheyne opened the conference with a prayer. He then asked for a nominee to serve as secretary. Rev. Pettit nominated Quita Debes and she was elected. "The purpose of this conference was to make a decision regarding the continuation or closing of the church. A letter dated March 6, 1988, to this effect had been sent to members. "Options offered by the District Superintendent were that the church might continue as a member of the conference with a 5th Sunday service, abandon the Church or continue as at present. "E. S. Milton moved that Gar Creek United Methodist Church discontinue services on May 31, 1988. Second was by Oscar Debes. The motion was amended to recommend that the property be sold to the Gar Creek Cemetery Association with mineral rights to be retained by the United Methodist Conference. Second to the amendment was by Bonnie Dickerson. Motion and Amendment passed. "Rev. Cheyne promised that he would recommend to the board that governs such transactions that the property be sold to the Cemetery Association for $200. He also said all Church membership roll books would be retained at the Fort Smith District Superintendents office. "The conference closed with a prayer by Rev. Pettit. /s/Quita Debes Acting Secretary" The last regular church service was held on May 29, 1988, 104 years after the original dedication. A dinner was held in the community building following the service. On two consecutive Sundays, July 31 and August 6, 1988, most of the remaining members transferred their membership to the First United Methodist Church in Ozark. Among the persons who had been long term members and were still members at the Church's closing were the following: Name Date Joined Gar Creek Church Ada Edgin Kearns August 2, 1911 Raymond Edgin August 14, 1921 Ozema Dunford Campbell August 21, 1921 Hoyt Lee August, 1931 Esther Lee August, 1931 Bonnie Dickerson May 10, 1932 Quita Campbell Debes August, 1933 Hazel Dickerson Milton September, 1935 Thanks are due to Ozema Campbell, Harold Dickerson, Quita Debes, Raymond Edgin, Ada Edgin Kearns, Dr. Thurman Shuller, Janice Edgin and the many other persons who checked typing and offered corrections to the Church records. Much of the information is from oral accounts from older people in the Gar Creek Community and are available from no other source. In addition, a debt of gratitude is due to those who faithfully kept the records of the church for over a century.
