MRS. A. R. SMITH Killed, Three Inured in Crash
with picture of Mrs. Smith

     MRS. A. R. SMITH, 64, 233 Vineyard, wife of A. R.
Smith, veteran pringing shop operator, was fatally
injured and three other persons hurt, including Mr.
Smith in an automobile collison last night around 7
o'clock 20 miles out the Little Rock highway, just
across the line in Saline county.
     Smith, who operates the printing company which
bears his name at 907 Central avenue, was brought to
St. Joseph's Hospital in a Gross ambulance.
     He was reportedly suffering from bruises, shock
and possibly two broken ribs.  Attendants reported 
Smith was resting "fairly well" today, although he is
being kept under close observation because of a heart
condition.
      Alva L. Chils, 48, 212 Miller St., driver of the
other auto, and Hugh Keene, about 42, of 147 Ramble,
were brought to St. Joseph's Hospital by a Benton
ambulance.  Childs was reported as having a severe
pain in his right leg, with possible fracture and
Keene underwent an operation for an abdominal injury
and was reported today as being in serious condition. 
     Both Childs and Keene were reported resting well
today by hospital attendants.
     Deputy Bill Dyer, of the Saline county sheriff's
office, who with Deputy Sheriff J. McClintock
investigated the accident, said that Child's auto
apparently swung about two feet across the centerline
of the highway in negotiating the sharp curve, which
is about a quarter-mile beyond Crow' Service Station,
and his vehicle sideswiped that of Smith, who with
Mrs. Smith, was returning to Hot Springs.
    He said that there was no skid marks preceding the
collision, and that Mrs. Smith was apparently thrown
from the auto against a tree by the force of the
impact.  He said that Smith's car proceeded about 150
feet after Mrs. Smith was thrown out, jumping a ditch
and halting in a pasture.  Childs car proceeded 222
feet and was halted just off the right hand side of
the road in the direction in which he was traveling,
Dyer said.  He said both vehicles were demolished, but
that neither turned over.
    He reported that there was no external bleeding on
the part of Mrs. Smith, and that apparently she was
killed instantly.  Dyer said no charges were filed.

       Mrs. Smith's body was taken to Gross Mortuary. 
Funeral services will be announced later.  She has
been a residence of Hot Springsfor 50 years and was an
active worker in the Fairdale Baptist Church, to which
she belonged.
       She is survived by her husband, two sons, J. R.
Smith of Hot Springs; and A. Richard Smith, Jr. of
Little Rock; six daughters, Mrs. Marnette Ethridge, of
Dallas, Mrs. Melba Meeks, of Montreat, North Carolina,
Mrs. Doria Price of Long Beach, California, Mrs.
Dorothy Bell Guerin, of New Orleans, Mrs. Norma Sue
Hall, of Tulsa, and Mrs. Corrine Miller, of Little
Rock; by her mother, Mrs. R. T. Guerin, of Fort Smith;
two brothers, O. S. Guerin of Fort Smith, and James
Guerin, of Texas; and by 24 grandchildren.
