George Walbert died Thursday, May 17, 1917. He was the great-great uncle of the submitter, Paul R. Mesing, of Centerville, OH. This clipping is from a collection of family papers. GEORGE WALBERT DIED YESTERDAY WELL KNOWN AND POPULAR CITIZEN PASSES AWAY AT PARK AVENUE HOME. - - - Deceased was Prominent in Business Circles and Was Known for His Many Kindly and Charitable Acts. - - - Death has claimed George Walbert. To business and professional men who knew him the news signalized the passing of a good and foremost citizen. To members of the Elks lodge it meant the loss of a fraternal brother, who, in his many acts of kindness and helpful interest in humanity, exemplified in his daily life and conduct the cardinal principles of this order. To the children of the poor the news of George Walbert's death means the loss of a "Big Brother," the passing of one whose presence brought cheer and substantial gifts of food and clothing, for his charities were many, and when a deserving case was called to his attention there was seldom a limit to his goodness in this respect. It was no common sight to see Mr. Walbert alight on a cold day from his automobile and pick up some barefoot tot, take the child to a store and buy much needed shoes or garments. One of the rooms in the Associated Charities was furnished by him. He was foremost among those who offered financial help for the sufferers in the two cyclones that swept Hot Springs outlaying districts. He held the esteem and respect of those who had the pleasure of his acquaintances. His word was his bond. Although interested in an extensive way with the stave industry and other commercial ventures, Mr. Walbert loved and appreciated his home. His first consideration at all times was his wife. Never a Sunday went by but marked the delivery of a large order of flowers for Mrs. Walbert. For the past two years Mr. Walbert's health was poor. Some weeks ago his wife took him to Mineral Wells, Texas. They returned two weeks ago, at which time the real seriousness of his condition caused genuine alarm among his friends. Death came peacefully to him early yesterday morning. He had closed his eyes and passed into the eternal sleep. Deceased is survived by his widow and mother and daughter, Mrs. Harry Wolfe, and grand-daughter, Cecil Wolfe, of Chicago, three brothers, Frank, Tom and Mart Walbert, and their wives of Batesville, Ark., Mrs. Langley, a sister-in-law, of Jonesboro, and Mr., and Mrs. Jack Soldan of Pittsburgh, Pa. were at his bedside. The funeral will be held from the residence, 655 Park avenue, this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. Dr. Marion Nelson Waldrip will officiate, and the services will be in charge of the Hot Springs lodge of Elks, of which deceased was a prominent and loyal member. All the pallbearers will be Elks. They include E. L. Howlett, Hugh Steele, Tom Golden, E. M. Cohen, John G. Higgins, Harry Jackson, active, and Dr. W. E. Parker, Dr. T. E. Holland, Dr. M. F. Mount, E. H. Bancroft, Geo. R. Watson and J. W. Farrish, honorary. All Elks are requested to attend the funeral service at the home. Besides the members of the family an escort of Elks will accompany the remains to Batesville. At Newport members of that Elks' lodge will join the funeral party. The remains will be taken from Hot Springs over the Iron Mountain at 6 o'clock this afternoon. Mr. Walbert was born in Allegheny, Pa., and had he lived until July would have been 56 years of age. He came to Arkansas 24 years ago, fIrst settling in Paragould and later in Batesville, where he became president of the Mount Olive Stave Company, which office in that corporation he held until his death. He was also president of the Sales Service Commission Company of Pittsburgh.
