All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm *********************************************************************** Jacob Sidney Smith (Died 13 April 1947)[Clipping from scrapbook - quoted with comments in (parenthesis)]Pine Bluff Commercial, Pine Bluff, AR, date unknown Jacob Sidney Smith, Aged 76 (*error), Dies Here Sunday Afternoon Jacob Sidney Smith, 81, retired farmer and well known resident of Grant county for 76 years, died Sunday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Fikes, 1704West 5th avenue, following a stroke suffered a week ago. Mr. Smith became ill in March with an attack of the flu, which was followed by a stroke suffered at the home of his daughter. Since last Wednesday his condition had been regarded as serious. Born in Lexington county, South Carolina on March 9, 1866, he was the son of the late George and Mary (*error should be Caroline not Mary) Koon Smith. Mr. Smith came to Grant county with his parents when five years of age and had continued to reside within a mile of the site of the family home. He received his education in the schools of Grant county. Mr. Smith was married to the former Miss Catherine Isabel Whiteon Jan. 15, 1890, in Grant county and to this union were born eleven children, all of whom survive with the exception of one son, the late Oscar Smith. Mrs. Smith (Catherine Isabel) died on Dec. 23, 1929. On April 25, 1932, Mr. Smith was married to the former Miss Ola Baugh in Grant county and to this union were born two children. He was a member of the Sardis Baptist church in Grapevine and had been actively connected with the work of the church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Smith of Grant county; eight sons, John Noah Smith, Bryant Smith, Fagan Smith of Pine Bluff, Albert Smith of Cedar Branch, Marvin Smith and Thea Smith of Sheridan, Bobby Dean Smith and Sidney Carlton Smith of Grant county; four daughters,Mrs. H. B. (Nora) Carleton and Mrs. H. J. (Fay) Fikes of Pine Bluff, Mrs. J. D. (Fronia) Goldman of Providence and Mrs. Curtis (Alice) Collins of Houston, Texas; one brother, Lonnie S. Smith of Grapevine; one sister,Mrs. Luly Heird of Cedar Branch; 33 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and number of other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Sardis Baptist church at Grapevine in charge of the Rev. R. M. Elswick, pastor of the Baptist church of Nashville, Ark., and the Rev. Parks of Prattsville, pastor of the Baptist church at Cedar Branch. Burial will be in Cedar Branch cemetery, in charge of Ralph Robinson and Son mortuary. Active pallbearers will be the following grandsons: George Smith, Stergin Smith, Arlee Smith, Stanley Smith, J. D. Smith, C. D. Smith, Eugene Carleton, James Sterling Goldman and Bonnie Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be C. A. Fikes, Roy Fikes, Otis Brewer, Leon Worthen, J. E. Worthen, Alma Moss, Garland Worthen, Andy Crossett, Preston Plunkett, Floyd Kelly, Henry Grimmett, Dr. C. B. Capel, Mallie Jeffcoat, Homer Lawrence, George Falls, Carl Falls, Champion Worthen, Ray Moran, Robert Ross, C. D. Buckley, A. M. Nicholson, and T. J. Taylor, A. C. Ross, T. A. Lites, Johnnie Hedden, Charley Bradford, Hermie Ashcraft, Hugh Lowman, Clyde Lowman, John Plunkett of Grapevine, Thea Shell and W. H. Fielding of Ladd, and George Reynolds of Sheridan. The remains of Mr. Smith will be at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Fikes, 1704 West Fifth avenue. The funeral cortege will leave the home Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock.
